Sewers of London warn for possibility of clogging at Christmas

London families were advised by the city for not putting the remains of Christmas lunches and dinners down the drain, under penalty of the giant Fatberg-dirt masses that clog the drains â€" come back to haunt the city.

The Thames Water, which manages the London sewers, warned the families that the blockages in the sewer system can increase by 25% at this time of year, so the oils, leftover food and sauces should not be sent there.

"The biggest obstruction had to deal with was the size of nine double-decker buses in fat feed and baby wipes, under Leicester Square, in 2010. We had to get him out of there to pressure, and the smell is awful, "explained Danny Brackley, Deputy director of the sewers of London.

The Thames Water spent €14,2 million (US $ 45 million) a year to repair sewers due to phenomena such as the Fatberg.

"When the fat freezes, removes oxygen from the atmosphere, so we must be very careful not to be poisoned," said Brackley.

Actually, are consumers themselves to feel its bad practices in the skin. Who get fat feed into the sewers can see her climb the lids, near their homes, or even the toilet.

"Everyone must wait for the fat feed cool, put it in a container and recycles it," explained Brackley, which has been working for four years on Thames Water but it is continually impressed by the complexity and diversity of his work.
