The end of the plastic bag: a global perspective

Every year, worldwide, is used about a billion plastic bags, which amounts to nearly two million bags every minute. The quantity used features large variations among countries in the world. If the Eastern Europeans use more than 400 plastic bags per year, the Danes and Finns use just four bags per year.

Plastic bags are produced using natural gas and oil, and often are only used once. However, these objects have a lifespan of over 100 years, which means that when they are not reused may affect the environment for more than a century.

Over the last century, the plastic taken from planet Earth. If on one hand the plastic seems to be a miraculous material, with various applications ranging from medical devices to the production of cars, on the other he is something of a curse, that allows the mass production of disposables that fill landfills, pollute the oceans and suffocate wildlife.

Full of additives that do not have a safety record, plastics are associated with a series of health problems, including some forms of cancer and infertility. Although the plastics can used and recycled intelligently, most products made from this material are not used consciously. Perhaps no other subject symbolizes so well the consumerist culture of humanity.

The beginning of the end of the age of plastic

Given the multitude of problems associated with the use of plastic bags, many communities have begun trying to break free of the obsession of plastic bags by implementing restrictions on the use or even the prohibition of these objects. The oldest law concerning the use of plastic bags and 1993 date was implemented in Denmark. The law is aimed at producers of plastic bags you have to pay a fee based on the weight of the bags. Was allowed to pass this increased cost to consumers, either through the collection of bags you want by increasing the price of other products. The initial effect of the law was a 60% decrease in the use of plastic bags.

One of the Government measures concerning the use of the bags is the national Ireland bag tax, adopted in 2002. This tax was the first to be taxing consumers directly, starting at 15 cents per bag. Five months after the measure implementation, utilization, and bags fell 90%. However, over the years, the use of the material is back on the rise and, in 2007, the rate was increased to 22 cents per bag. In 2011, was added a menu to the law in order to restrict the annual use of up to 21 bags per person.

Although the Irish tax being the most well known, there are other European countries where consumers pay for bags â€" either through laws or the initiative of commercial spaces. These countries are Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Netherlands, Latvia and Portugal (where many stores charge for bags). Additionally, Member States of the European Union must implement measures to reduce the use of plastic bags in 80% by 2019, referred to Treehugger.

Concern for animals

Reducing the amount of gift bags on marine ecosystems has been one of the main European concerns the environmental level. In the proposal presented by the European Commission reduction reads that "in the North Sea, the stomachs of 94% of all bird species contain plastics or traces of the material".

This concern with the marine animals took Australia to implement measures in 2003, particularly in Tasmania, due to the migration route of the whales. Currently, half of the Australian States have restrictions on the use of the bags.

In addition to the concerns about marine life, the reasons for the implementation of restrictions on the use of plastic relate to outbreaks of malaria, that are associated with the collection and transport of water in bags in Kenya, but also with the drains clogged by sacks in Bangladesh, Cameroon and the Philippines.

In Texas, United States, various animals began to suffocate after ingesting plastic, which led to the regulation of the use of the bags. In India, the concern is with the cows, considered sacred by the Indians. In the capital of Mauritania, 70% of deaths of cattle are related to the ingestion of plastic bags and in the UAE's concern with the camels.

The most severe measure from all over the world, when it comes to the use of bags, is in Rwanda. Since 2008, the bags were banned and the international passengers coming into the country are obliged to deliver to the authorities all the plastic bags to bring with you. It is not clear, however, the success of the measure, particularly in less urban areas because there is a black market for plastic bags.

In South Africa, where it is possible to find abandoned bags in trees, shrubs and other vegetation, the plastic bag was already dubbed the national flower. In 2003, it was implemented a restriction of the use of thin plastic bags that tear easily and thicker bags are taxed. Other 16 African countries have implemented or measures already announced to ban certain types of plastic bags.

In China, where pollution caused by bags has increased exponentially, there are few cities and provinces which try to limit the use. In 1990, began to limit the use of the bags. However, the measure had no effect. In Latin America there are also some initiatives to reduce waste caused by bags. In Chile, the towns of Pucón and Punta Arenas have banned its use.

In Argentina, the States of Buenos Aires and Mendoza also have banned the bags. In some States of Brazil is only allowed the use of biodegradable plastic bags. In January 2012, Sao Paulo has banned the use of plastic bags little resistant, allowing only those of greater durability, which began to be taxed. However, the measure was eventually abolished by a court that, say environmentalists, have been influenced in its decision by the plastics industry.

New York ponders building inspired station in extraterrestrial life

Two architects of AMLGM Labs conceived a new central station for the neighborhood of Queens, New York. Christening of Urban Alloy Towers, the space is just a hypothetical project, which probably won't come out of the paper. However, if ever realized, the space might serve as a backdrop for science fiction films and aliens, since its shape is futuristic enough to seem like a creation of aliens.

The station would connect with the existing LIRR station in Woodside. The structure was also designed with the environment in mind, it was enhanced energy efficiency and equipped with a kind of veil protector sensitive that regulates the amount of light entering the building, referred to Inhabitat.

The Urban Alloy Towers was also designed in such a way as to take advantage of the remaining spaces involving the intersection and elevated lines LIRR. Thus, the building has a species of arms which extend outwards in the direction of the streets. Seen from above, the building resembles a cross placed on the city's streets.

As for the interior, the space has several complexes, as well as offices and shops. The plans include the construction of a lobby so users can see the rail lines from the commercial area.

These are our ancestors

Elisabeth Daynès is an artist best-artist fascinated by paleontology-French girl who dedicated his last work to resurrect our ancestors â€" the furthest. Daynès used clay and silicon to make models and realistic sculptures, trying to imagine what they were like the faces of our most distant ancestors.

The creative process begins with the examination of the skull. Later, a computational model tells how artist should be their man, a muscular point of view. Elisabeth also AIDS the scientific literature to decide minor details like eye color, and uses a mixture of human and yak hair for the hominids.

According to the artist, each model is the "synthesis" of all knowledge about the origins of mankind.

Daynès began working with masks to get inside to his passion, the theater, but quickly turned to the evolution of man. In his career of 20 years, the French have recreated Lucy, the famous australopiteca who lived there are one or two million years, and other hominoids and homo erectus.

The program has the support of Out of the shell, Entrajuda, the General Directorate of education and the youth in action programme, the European Union, and this year with a special push: Rock In Rio (Laugh).

Thus, the CGD and Rock In Rio asked the students of all secondary schools covered organize an action for funds to support a social cause. This Union of social projects â€" Young VolunTeam and Laugh â€" enabled the first go further in its aim to raise funds for the creation or reinforcement of homerooms in IPSS (charities).

"We intend to equip homerooms, insofar as we believe that education is an essential vehicle to break cycles of poverty, thereby promoting social inclusion. We have the energy and determination of Secondary school students to help give back, "said Francisco Viana, director of communications and branding of the box.

Promoting the culture of volunteering in Portugal has been, moreover, one of the main commitments of action of CGD â€" in this case, with the groupings of secondary schools across the country, strengthening the recognition of the importance of the contribution of these to the development of fundamental skills for young people, in different axes: social inclusion, education, entrepreneurship, employment and citizenship.

This year's Edition, the Young VolunTeam featured the inscription of 93 high schools across the country, with a total of 185 teachers coordinators and 2,400 students ambassadors of the program in their schools and surrounding communities.

This action with the Rock In Rio is paradigmatic of the importance of the project â€" and how far he can go. In it, the groups of students from ten schools with better provision will be invited to continue the action of raising funds in Rock in Rio-Lisbon, where they can also enjoy and watch the concerts and entertainments of the Cidade do Rock.

This initiative will be extended to employees still in the box, which could help in fund raising, as well as the community as a whole, that can contribute directly through a sympathetic account. A real project of social inclusion.

New York: cruise ship collides with rare whale

A sei whale, the third largest species of whales in the world and who is at risk of extinction, washed up dead last Sunday, in Brooklyn, New York, after having collided with a Norweigan Cruise Line cruise.

The whale, of 13.7 meters, was hit by the 323-metre vessel, but New York authorities still do not know if she was alive or dead before this accident. The ship, which was returning from a seven-day trip through the Caribbean, had to stay several hours in the port of New York â€" just when the tug arrived, in fact, is that the authorities noticed in the presence of the whale.

According to Maggie Moone-Their National, Oceanica and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the whale's carcass was transported to the Army Corps of Engineers, in New Jersey, while the be autopsied by biologists of The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation.

"Our team of necropsy spent all day [with the whale] and noticed several traumatic injuries, broken ribs and a bruise on the right side of the animal," said the executive director of The Riverside Foundation, Robert DiGiovianni, at The Huffington Post.

Still, only within several weeks to know if the ship killed the sei whale, or if this was already dead when she was hit by a boat. According to The New York Post, the whale is now buried.

Penguins are being affected by a new type of flu

There is a new strain of bird flu. However, this new mutation does not affect the usual suspects, nor to spread quickly. A team of scientists has discovered a new and unique strain of virus in Antarctica and that is affecting only the penguins.

According to the study published in the scientific journal Exchange, two large colonies of Adelie penguins, which inhabit the peninsula Antarctica, are carriers of bird flu but are not suffering the usual symptoms caused by the virus. In fact, the penguins don't appear to be sick. But the big question lies not in the fact that the Penguins are not to be affected by symptoms but how the animals were contaminated by the virus in the first place.

One of the researchers ' explanations for what happened is the presence of the virus in Antarctica, which probably was stashed on ice for years. However, other explanations are possible. The birds, including the Antarctic, tend to migrate thousands of miles each year, and during these migrations, the virus may have been transported to the region for over 50 years. It is also possible that the virus is transported by the whales and seals, the Dodo.

Regardless of how the virus ended up in Antarctica, experts are concerned, since the strain can spread even more. Even if the birds are not to be affected by the virus currently in future viral mutations may cause mass casualties.

Wind turbine takes energy to places where itinerant she doesn't exist

According to the United Nations, about 1.3 billion people have no access to energy, in other words, one in every five global citizens have to do your day to day without electricity. Therefore, many engineers and innovators are finding infrastructures that respond effectively to this enormous challenge.

One of these projects, developed by start-up Altaeros, created a kind of floating wind turbine, the BAT-Buoyant Airborne Turbine. The turbine is filled with helium, being the technology linked to the monitoring of weather systems to align its position efficiently.

The turbine reaches 300 meters high, three times more than a conventional turbine, allowing the use of double winds in relation to current technology.

The first tests were conducted in the State of Maine, in the region of New England, in the United States, and the next prototype is seriously. The city of Fairbanks, Alaska, will receive the BAT due to €935 thousand (r $ 2.9 million) of investment made by the company that distributes energy in the region. The commercial demonstration phase should last 18 months.

After that, the goal is to expand and take the floating turbine to Africa or places using dirty sources, such as diesel. According to the MIT alumni who founded the startup and are responsible for technology, the BAT has sufficient capacity to supply 12 houses.

Ben Glass, CEO of Altaeros, said in an interview to the website Mother Nature Network access and the installation are much easier. "The BAT is transported and installed without the need for cranes, towers or underground foundations â€" factors that tied earlier drafts of wind farms".

The video presents the project says that the BAT is the next generation of wind energy, "cheaper, flexible and significantly more efficient". Cheap, apparently, will not be. But it's welcome.

These gaming machines have the particularity to only work with brand plastic bottles when they are empty, so the company can thereby remove much of their bottles of household waste or streets.

The action is called Happiness Arcade, is part of a campaign Where Will Happinness Strike Next and was developed by Grey agency Dhaka.

See the making of the campaign.

It is true that the city of Dhaka is going through serious difficulties in terms of sanitation, and that this will be a good idea to promote recycling, but this idea has one catch â€" the only accept American-branded bottles. Who knows if this cannot be a way to promote recycling in other countries and cities, but in a comprehensive way and not exclusive of a trademark?

Until 2016, the city of Porto will be transformed into a kind of laboratory for improving urban mobility, security and quality of life of its citizens. The project is called Future Cities, has the support of several entities, including the Câmara Municipal do Porto, and the unbeaten city is among the most innovative in Europe within two years.

"The project uses the city as a living laboratory to install a network of sensors to capture a series of information in terms of mobility, environmental data or noise. This allows us to have a monitoring several parameters online almost the quality of life, "explained to the green economy Filipe Araújo, innovation and environment Alderman of the Câmara Municipal do Porto.

Today there are more than 900 sensors that measure the quality of life of portuenses. "[This project] is important to the city because it will allow us to have a more efficient," explains Filipe Araújo. "To feel the city, we have more detailed information about parameters such as noise or other type of pollution, and that allows us to make choices in a more sustained. Neighbours summer harbour a camera more efficient and more concerned with streamline environmental everywhere, "continued Filipe Araújo.

According to the charge, the project also wants to draw more companies, especially multinationals, to the borders of invicta. Companies that want to come try their products and see how a smartcity if can position. "We are also supporting the economy," concluded the Mayor.

The Future Cities will cost almost € 2 million, divided between the European Union and the NSRF. One of the novelties is a social network of buses, whose performance can be monitored at the time.

"We can collect data as the quality of the floor, the air and the driver's driving style. Are very different but are georeferenced, "explained John Barros, of the Faculty of engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).

According to researchers at FEUP, this monitoring of all data related to the well-being of citizens in their city will be common to all large and medium-sized cities in the future. To this end, the city of Porto will be the Guinea pig and, in the short term, will receive direct and indirect credit of this bet.

More than 4,300 prisoners will fight California fires

More than 4,300 low-risk prisoners will help combat the fires in California, in what will be one of the most threatening fires seasons in the history of the u.s. State. These prisoners are part of Conservation Camp Program, which allows some of these men and women can fight the fires instead of spending your time in the cell.

The prisoners are now living in about 40 places, designed specifically for this purpose. The program is not new, in fact: he dates from 1946 and is the largest and oldest of its kind in the United States, resulting from a partnership between the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR)

According to the Huffington Post explains, these inmates will represent one-third of the force of Californian firefighters. The American State is going through one of the most violent droughts in its history and, to complicate the situation, the number of fires of 2014 already tripled in relation to 2013.

"These teams are vital for us, especially this year, which will be the most difficult ever. Are a very important part of our Department and a great resource. We constantly use them ", explained Lynne Tolmachoff, firefighters ' spokesman Californians.

This program is only open to prisoners who do not have a history of violent crimes, murder or arson. Are mainly attached to fulfill the final part of his sentence-are feathers of up to two years and eight months are passed in the fields of conservation.

All inmates undergo a rigorous training of a month, with physical challenges and notions about the fire and how to fight the fires. Are paid in cash and in reduction of the sentence â€" two days for each day's work. And an opportunity to pay their debt to society.

"There is a great camaraderie when these teams work together. It is a privilege and is something which many of them learn lessons. Some of the prisoners, in fact, end up coming to work with us, "concluded Tolmachoff.

According to the CDCR, this initiative saves taxpayers every year, about €57,6 million ($ 177 million). It is recalled that this is a controversial topic in Portugal, although often mentioned by politicians and mayors. And the reader, agree with him?

For 900 years, the Crac des Chevaliers was one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the world, a historic site listed by Unesco and by where they spent some of the most important figures of that region, in the last millennium.

However, Crac des Chevaliers has already been hit by the chaos that lives in Syria, as the population of Hosn by there refuge. In March, a military offensive damaged some of the walls of the Castle, while an air strike destroyed part of the roof and some religious items.

The Crac des Chevaliers, in fact, is one of the historical monuments Syrians who is about to be destroyed by the civil war in the country, which is jeopardizing the lives of thousands of people, and some of its greatest riches.

The photographs published by the Daily Mail allow you to view mattresses and rugs inside the Castle, as well as clothes, shoes and stoves.

The who is recommending to all citizens of countries where the virus is prevalent, including Pakistan and Syria, the new men before you travel. "All the conditions for an international public health emergency were hit," explained Bruce Aylward.

This measure was considered by Bruce as an "extraordinary event". Read 10 important facts about polio.

Did you know that dogs also donate blood?

Every two months, Roxi, a dog, makes a trip to the vet. However, it is not for routine visits. Roxi will help other dogs in need. This bitch from the State of Illinois, in the United States, is one of several animals that go to the Animal Emergency Center, the city of Bettendorf, donate blood for other dogs.

Also dogs may need blood transfusions and, in case of accident or illness, it is necessary that there is a blood bank and other healthy dogs that they can donate blood.

"The Roxi is a good patient to us," says Bruce Benge, the veterinarian in charge by the Centre. "She is very calm and typically stay down, very quiet, during the donation process," cites the Dodo.

However, in the likeness of human blood banks, the problems are the same. "It's important to have a consistent range of donors, because the canine blood has a short duration, between 30 to 35 days, and the stock needs to be replaced regularly," said the Human Society. "Many veterinary clinics do not require blood regularly and, as such, do not have reservations. It is in these cases that the canine blood banks at regional and national levels suppress the faults ".

A 45-minute visit to the vet every five to seven weeks may help save the lives of other four-legged companions.

The new generation of wind turbines

Urban Green Energy, one of the leading companies in the renewable energy segment, recently revealed the new generation of vertical-axis wind turbines, the VisionAIR3, whose design differs from the traditional wind turbines.

The new turbine, which has been developed during more than a year, offers more durability and more efficiently than previous models. The main novelty is that the turbine blades are not arranged longitudinally, but vertically in a spiral. Additionally, the paddles are built with the vacuum infusion process, which makes them more efficient, says oInhabitat.

"Energy security and changes are critical issues that increasingly concern the world. The areas that have a weak power grid often turn to expensive and inefficient generators to bridge the network failures, "said business development manager from Urban Green Design, Jamie Myers. "As we continue to respond to the challenges of energy all over the world, the VisionAIR3 will be a vital piece in the puzzle that will make it possible to create better energy supply systems to our customers", indicates.

Young American takes grandmother of 89 years to the prom

There are stories so inspiring that become impossible not to share, because they speak of values that this society sometimes tends to forget. One of them is the love and respect for your elders, how is this example story that has as protagonist Delores Dennison, a grandmother of 89 years.

Delores never went to her prom, for financial reasons, and his grandson, in possession of this so privileged information, invited her to his own ball. "A few months ago, I called him to ask if she wanted to be my date. it would be great to take my grandmother to the dance," explained Austin to Fox News.

Delores I wasn't expecting the proposal as his own confessed. "He was so sweet and stubborn. I asked him: ' are you sure you don't want to take one of your young friends who could do anything with you? '. He said no, "said the" young "of 89 years.

The idea of Austin originated in the older brother of his economics professor, who invited his own grandmother.

After accepting, Delores had his first major challenge: buy a dress. "They were either too long or short, wanted no part of it," joked. He ended up choosing a blue dress and confess, a posteriori, that night was magic.

"It was fantastic and I loved watching all the girls with those amazing dresses, and boys with their facts. It was a quiet night, "he explained. Still, the dance was interrupted in the Middle, once Delores no longer had power to both.

According to Austin, everything went better than I had imagined. "I have great respect for your elders. They have a great influence on my life, and be able to sit and talk to them â€" and learn from their experiences â€" is spectacular, "said young.

To the end was the best part. The music chosen by Austin to terminate the prom was Dolores, made famous by Frank Sinatra and Grandma's favorite song. "I chose this song because my grandmother used to sing it to her. We shared this dance was amazing, "concludes Austin.

Portuguese catering and hospitality guide premiere environmental indicator

Evaluate the good environmental practices in the accommodation and restaurants, contributing to national that the environmental impact is as low as possible is the aim of the environmental indicator that has just been created by green dot Corporation exclusively for the Good Bed good table Guide, edited by the newspaper Expresso and the Vision Magazine. The first results of this evaluation are provided in the guide which was recently put up for sale.

This innovative index seeks to evaluate the environmental practices of restaurants and hotels, through individualized questionnaire, on a simplified scale and continuous 1 to 5 points. The rational consumption of water, energy saving and waste management are the main components evaluated.

"In a country that increasingly turned to the outside, we thought relevant to value and encourage the good environmental practices of hospitality and catering establishments, since they are a privileged point of contact with foreign citizens visiting our country. On the other hand, this index aims to respond to consumer demands increasingly sensitized national for the importance of the environment, allowing you to extend the best practices out of the House, "says Luis Veiga Martins said in a statement, CEO of green dot Corporation.

Green dot society believes that this environmental indicator will give a vital contribution, through the promotion of good practices, for the achievement of the objectives of Portugal in environmental matters to alert and sensitize the catering establishments and hotels to practices that have a direct impact on operational costs reduction and natural resource savings.

The opinion is shared by Francisco Pinto Balsemão, Chairman of the holding Company, owner of the Express titles and vision. "The teams that searched, visited and reviewed hundreds of sites, had a new major challenge: assess environmental good practices, through an indicator prepared exclusively for the good guide Bed good table, by the green dot. Hard work and largely, to sensitize those responsible for restaurants and hotels to the importance of these good practices for the present and for the future of our country ".

The saving of natural resources is today a form of effective cost savings in operations of this type of accommodation. In turn, consumers are increasingly demanding and see in good environmental practices a responsible behaviour with identifying themselves. For this reason, were also valued the behaviors that take place away from the watchful eye of consumers (backoffice operations) and shared practices with employees and consumers (front office).

The 2014 Edition of the Guide Good Bed good table presents 408 accommodations and 591 restaurants. In addition to the traditional Guide Good Bed good table, with € 500 in discount coupons that readers can use in dozens of hotels, is also available to App Good Bed good table, 2014 through Play Google or from the App Store.

Madrid: diesel cars will pay more for parking

Diesel cars of Madrid will soon pay more for parking than their petrol brethren, according to the Guardian. It is the fault of the new smart parking meters that the Spanish capital prepares to install, that will add a fee to the cars that pollute more.

The initiative kicks off on July 1 and will use a highly complex pricing table, dictated by engine type and year of construction of the vehicle. The hybrids will pay 20 percent less than the average of vehicles, for example. A diesel car manufactured in 2001 will pay 20% more, while electric cars can park for free.

The mayors of Madrid expect the new price list will help solve the problem of pollution â€" the city is constantly breaking air quality levels required by the European Union, exceeding the limitations of nitrogen dioxide. This is one of the measures used to discourage car use in the city centre.

The price of parking meters will also vary depending on the street â€" a system that already exists in Lisbon, of rest. The streets with more available parking spaces will cost less, the other will be 20% more expensive. In some streets, the parking price will reach €3,29 per hour.

According to the Guardian, one in every four madridistas will pay substantially more for a parking spot. A reason to discourage the approximately one million drivers from Madrid to take your vehicle to the busiest streets of the city, helping to reduce pollution levels.

Large amount of trash discovered in deep sea in Europe

There is a lot of garbage, bottles, plastic bags between and fishing nets, in the deep sea of Europe, the Mediterranean and European coast to the mesoatlântico, the 2,000 miles of Earth.

This is the result of an investigation which involved 15 organizations from all over Europe and was led by Center IMAR, University of the Azores.

The investigation gave rise to a scientific paper published on Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE, which explains that the large amount of garbage that reaches the deep sea is a subject of global importance ". "The results of the study highlight the extent of the problem and the need for action to prevent the growing accumulation of garbage in marine environments", researchers have revealed.

Named Marin Litter Distribution and Density in European Seas, from the Shelves to Deep Basins, the study adds that the Marine trash still has the problem of being confused for a few animals as food, a process known as ghost fishing.

Of the approximately 600 samples taken by scientists over the Arctic Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediterranean Sea, between 35 and 4,500 meters deep, the plastic was the most common item. On the other hand, the garbage associated with fishing activities-networks and lines stuck in the bottom â€" is particularly common in seamounts, oceanic ridges and banks.

"This research has shown that the human garbage is present in all marine habitats, from beaches to deeper areas and remote areas of the oceans," explained Christopher Lusa Pham, researcher at the University of the Azores.

"Most of the deep sea remains unexplored by humans and this is our first visit to many of these sites, so we were shocked to discover that the trash was there before us," added the scientist.

According to the study, garbage was found in virtually all sites investigated, with plastic to contribute globally with about 41% and abandoned fishing equipment with about 34% of the total. It was also discovered glass, metal, wood, paper and cardboard, clothing, ceramics and other materials not identified.

What happens when you cross a zebra with a donkey? A zonkey

What animal looks like a zebra but only have stripes on the legs? A zonkey. A zonkey is the animal resulting from a cross between a zebra and a donkey (ass). However, these crossovers are quite rare because the chromosomes of the two species tend to not be compatible.

Last week, however, was born a zonkey on a Zoo of Mexico. It's called Kumbh and does not have any health problem, apart from the fact that it is sterile, because as the Mule â€" the cross between a donkey and a horse or horse and a dumb-is barren due to the odd number of chromosomes that prevent meiosis.

Kumbh is not the result of in vitro fertilization, but the love between mother zebra, Rayas, and albino donkey, father Ignacio. The animals used to meet every afternoon at the zoo and eventually, Rayas ended up pregnant.

This small Mexican zonkey is the first to be born in captivity. Last year, Ippo, another was born a zonkey on a Zoo in Florence, Italy. Despite being a rare animal, it is possible to find wild zebrasnos in South Africa and Namibia, countries where donkeys and zebras live in proximity.

The seven horses of a Swedish maid cloth

Ulrika Cordwood is a young Swedish photographer of 23 years. However, despite the young age, Ulrika isn't limited to pointing the lens of the camera and photograph. The photographer creates part of their scenarios through the incorporation of plastic elements created for her.

In the latest work, Girl With 7 Horses (Girl with 7 Horses), Ulrika intended to portray a young maiden whose seven horses are raptured by high winds on a fall afternoon.

Ulrika's horses are created from their own clothes that are laid out in the landscape. The result in film is, at the same time, fleeting, permanent and fleeting, even if fixed.

The project was started as a way to incorporate animals into your photographic imagery, the artist's access to scarce animals. "I photographed my first horse in the early autumn of last year and on the journey home came the idea of the girl and their seven horses," says Ulrika, quoted by Ecouterre.

Clegg said he wants to encourage drivers to abandon petrol and diesel vehicles, making electric vehicles more accessible â€" about €230 million ($ 710 million) investment will serve to finance discounts of up to € 5,700 ($ 17,700) per car.

The infrastructures were also not forgotten: more charging points will be installed on streets and roads, to provide security to drivers, and the cities will have money to launch plans of benefits for users of electric cars: free parking or permission to use the Bus lanes.

What happens when young elephants eat fruits of excess canhoeiro?

The fruit of the marula canhoeiro â€" or â€" can cause intoxication in animals that eat it in excess, due to alcohol that is generated in the process of maturation. Was this the reason why the elephants you see on our gallery look drunk.

According to Ross Couper, Kruger's Guide, these young elephants have eaten this fruit in large quantities â€" she is sweet and refreshing â€" but weren't aware of its side effects and intoxicants.

"The elephants were young and exotic or some signs of being touched," said Couper. Other possibilities is these elephants have eaten beetle pupae that live in the bark of marulas.

See pictures-innocent and fun.

Brazil: 90% of recyclable material is picked up by scavengers who earn less than € 195/month

About 600 thousand Brazilians collect 90% of recyclable materials recovered, according to data from the corporate commitment to recycling (Cempre), an organization that brings together companies such as Coca-Cola, Unilever or Gerdau.

These workers, who have in their hands the success and future of recycling in the country, collect the recycling from the streets of cities or the dumpsters in the country, according to the Ipea (Institute of applied economic research).

"Most of the work is carried out by recycling them. Scavengers play a role of immense strategic value for the industry, in addition to providing an important environmental service by which are little valued, "explained to National Geographic Brazil Albino Rodrigues Alvarez, technical planning and research of the Ipea.

By "environmental services unappreciated", Albino Alvaraz aims to explains that each maker takes home per month, less than € 195 ($ 600). Still, these workers were recognised by the Brazilian solid waste Policy (PNRS) as important agents for the implementation of the recycling processes.

According to the Ipea, only 10% of collectors belong to cooperatives. It would be a good news that this percentage would increase, since the monthly income of a maker of a cooperative may be between €260 ($ 800) and €420 ($ 1,300), maximum value reached in São Paulo.

In Brazil, according to Cempre, in 2012, the market turnover of sorting and collection of recyclables generated R $ 712,3 million (€231 million), but only $ 56.4 million (18.4 million) â€" 8% of the total-was with cooperatives. The remainder was concentrated in the hands of wholesalers.

A better way to distribute these resources is being put into practice in Sao Paulo, in which some cooperatives for failing to verticalize space or incorporate other chains to the process, began to organise themselves into networks. In the case of Cooper Glycerius, Bishop. "In addition to creating a territorial capillarity in selective collection, [that] lets you share more efficient operational technology such as presses and sorting mats, and social technology, such as the Organization of a cooperative model better structured, which becomes a polo diffuser", explained Mário Agrawal, a professor of management and project Advisor of technology incubator of popular cooperatives of Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV)from São Paulo.

Although it is difficult that a city recycle 100% of its rubbish, this is the objective for 2020 of the city of San Francisco, California, United States. The goal doesn't seem unreachable, since, at the moment, about 83% of the solid wastes are reused. But, according to Kevin Drew, Environment Program Coordinator of the American city, Brazil has a large advantage to achieve this quickly: the pickers.

"If their experience is leveraged and better remunerated by the important environmental service they provide, cities like São Paulo can recycle 100% of the dry fraction of junk even before us, [San Francisco," he explained.

As the suburbs are trying to stop the exodus of young adults for the cities

A few decades ago, the young Americans at the 20-somethings out of their parents ' House, located in the suburbs of large cities, going to University or look for work in major urban centres. However, after getting some financial stability and constitute a family, they eventually go back to the suburbs, where the quality of life tends to be better and more attractive housing prices.

However, this pattern is changing. The latest data indicate that young adults are choosing to stay in big cities, building their lives there, forgetting completely the possibility of a suburban life.

Researchers and politicians have been poring over the problems and formulated some theories that can explain the phenomenon. One of the factors that can explain the abandonment of the suburbs is the price of housing, which are similar to the prices of large cities. In this way, with identical prices and with more services available in major urban centres life becomes more enjoyable.

The fact that big cities have good transport networks, which allows young adults did not own cars, is another of the factors of attractiveness of main cities. Also the existence of more services, shops, entertainment venues and catering has a big weight in time to choose the city or the suburbs.

The lack of financial stability and employment are also theories that can help explain the abandonment of the suburbs. Without employment, young people choose to stay longer in major cities looking for work and also because here the opportunities are more in number than in smaller cities.

Unemployment causes the young constitute family increasingly late. Consequently, the possibility of giving the big city for a smaller city will also increasingly being delayed, reports the New York Times.

However, many suburban cities â€" particularly in the vicinity of the great European capitals and u.s. cities â€" are trying to modernize and become more attractive to young adults. This strategy of revitalization through the construction of more residential complexes with prices or incomes more into account, entertainment complexes, shops, restaurants and improve public transport systems, betting on the construction of cycle tracks.

Although it is impossible to compare, to 100%, the two realities, the truth is that we believe that the phenomenon could be transferred to the Portuguese reality. And the reader, what do you think?

State of Tennessee wants to ban construction of Bus Rapid Transit System

The State of Tennessee, in the United States, should prohibit the construction of Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) in two municipalities, including the capital, Nashville, in what is, so far, one of the most ominous news of the year.

Second minus one Car, the Bill now presented "prohibits Governments and the Metropolitan transit authority to construct, maintain or operate any Bus Rapid Transit system", explains the Think Progress.

If the Bill is approved, will bring the construction of the BRT system of 11 miles to Nashville assessed in the amount of €126 million (US $ 387 million), the AMP, but also any collective transportation system proposed for the city.

The ban was strongly supported by Charles and David Koch, the oil magnate and owner of the second largest company in the United States. The brothers Koch Brothers are determined to use their influence to lobby to prevent the construction of the BRT system.

Unlike traditional buses, BRT is known as one of the most efficient solutions to offer transport services of high quality at attractive costs in urban areas, both in developed countries as in developing countries.

BRT systems are flexible systems of transport in buses, with a via exclusive and that allow you to respond to various challenges, namely congested roads, environmental pollution and overloaded transport networks.

According to the experts, the BRT systems consist of one or more rows (major axis) on which vehicles travel in a high cycle frequency and include tracks dedicated to separate from the rest of the bus traffic and convenient boarding platforms and secure, guaranteed a fast shipping.

The pioneering implementations of BRT systems took place in various cities such as Curitiba (Brazil), Bogota (Colombia) and Brisbane (Australia). For example, in Bogota, with the introduction of BRT there was an exponential increase in the number of citizens who use public transportation, getting the system to respond to about 42 thousand passengers per hour.

Other cities followed the trail of early experiences, such as Seoul, South Korea (2004), Beijing, China (2005), and Istanbul, Turkey.

USA: in vitro fertilization responsible for 1 million twins

Since 1915 â€" when the birth data began to be tracked in the United States-until 1980, one in every 50 babies born had a twin, which corresponded to a rate of 2%.

Subsequently, the rate began to increase: in 1995 was 2.5%. In 2001, exceeded the 3% and in 2010 reached 3.3%. Currently, one out of every 30 babies born has a twin. The rate corresponds to many additional twins since 1980, but how many?

When the American Diseases Control Center calculated the number in 2009, concluded that there were 865 thousand twins. The calculations were redone with the data available until 2012 and it was concluded that there are 1,009,337 twins more than in 1980.

A few years ago, researchers from the Center for disease control analysed the phenomenon. Multiple pregnancies have an unfavorable impact on the main indicators of perinatal health, as the rates of premature births and underweight, "concluded the researchers, means the Quartz. Given the findings, the researchers wanted to know what was causing the increase in the birth of twins.

Enter the various conclusions that they reached with a deeper inquiry was that older women tend to have more twins than younger women and children in General. This demographic phenomenon was responsible for a third of the increase in the twins.

Researchers attributed the remaining increase to fertility treatments, especially in vitro fertilization and drugs that stimulate ovulation. The increase in the rate of births of twins seems to be, however, to stabilize. This is due in part to changes in the procedures of assisted reproductive technologies.

For example, the number of embryos implanted in the IVF process has a direct correlation with the number of multiple births. Thus, deploy two or more embryos increases the likelihood of at least one succeed and develop. However, it also increases the risk of multiple pregnancies. Previously, the number of embryos implanted was superior â€" what stimulated the increase of births of twins.
