Broccoli may prevent skin cancer

The latest weapon in the war against cancer is lean, green skin and hated by most children: broccoli. The secret, according to researcher Sally Dickinson, resides in sulforaphane, which exists naturally in these vegetables and has already demonstrated risk reduction properties of various forms of cancer.

"Even if there is a greater awareness about the need for a limited sunlight exposure and the use of sunscreens, we continue to see many cases of skin cancer each year," said Dickinson, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Arizona. "We are looking for better methods for skin cancer prevention in formats that are affordable and easy to use by people. Sulforaphane can be an excellent candidate for use in the prevention of cancer caused by exposure to ultraviolet rays. "

Dickinson's research shows that sulforaphane is highly adaptable and effective in the inhibition of cancer-causing pathways, as the AP-1 protein, while active genes chemo protectors, as the Nrf2. a pilot study conducted in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University, will test a topical solution of broccoli in the skin of a group of patients, in order to verify the effectiveness of the compound to simulated sunlight. Previous studies have demonstrated the safety of topical and oral extract.

The Ecouterre added that, if the search is successful, Dickinson believes that we may have sulforaphane based products indicated for patients with compromised immune system.

"Sulforaphane is the type of compound that has many incredible and theoretical applications if your dosage is done correctly," defends the researcher. "We already know that is quite effective in blocking of burns and we've seen where that can induce protective enzymes for the skin."
