Israel: genetically modified plant can survive in arid zones

Talking about genetically modified organisms is halfway to generate controversy and this news, of course, will bring back the Green Savers this thread. Is that, according to the Green Prophet, some genetically modified superplantas at Technion University in Haifa, in Israel, survived in arid zones.

The Green Prophet says that these plants are not related with GMOs (genetically modified organisms). "They have a bad reputation because multinationals mix DNA that does not belong to them to create crops resistant to drought and pesticides, which we will eat, but manipulate DNA with components of plants, however, is a normal practice," advances the site.

Thus, the site tells how the biology professor Shimon Gepstein forgot these modified organisms, during some weeks, arid land. When he returned, he noticed that the plants had survived, with success, the accidental negligence.

"These plants can survive droughts, spend a month without seeing water and, even though the reguemos, only need 30% of the amount of fluid of normal plants," explained Gepstein a article published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The scientist says that modified the longevity of plants to increase levels of cytokinin, hormones which delay the aging process.

When confronted with the charges to be "playing" with nature, to modify the plants, Gepstein says there is no problem. "Despite the words" genetically modified "be strong, I can tell you that our plants are not dangerous to human health," revealed Gepstein, "actually, we [only] we changed to using their own components, not added anything". And the reader, believe this explanation?
