The European Union (EU) will drop a number of proposals of law planned for the coming months, including the prohibition of hairdressers use high heels in the workplace for health reasons, according to the Financial Times.

According to British newspaper, the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso believes that these measures will allow a "cultural shift in the way the EU works." According to the Portuguese, the EU became more alert in relation to costs of businesses and citizens through these laws â€" many of which are not understood by businesses and citizens.

"I strongly believe that the EU should not get in the middle of everything that happens in Europe. [The decisions must be made] closer to the citizen ", he stressed.

This statement comes following requests from countries such as United Kingdom, the Netherlands or Germany for the EU to be more pragmatic in the regulation, leaving much of it for their own States.

Finland, Denmark and United Kingdom have complained recently of a Brussels bureaucracy that regulates the form of the bananas that are comercializdas. In may, it is recalled, the European Commission was obliged to withdraw the prohibition of salt and pepper shakers in restaurants. In Portugal, the ban remains, however.

The new plan will review much of European legislation and make it more simple, assures the FT.
