Photography captures elephant seeing dead Companion (with PHOTO)
This incredible image portrays the moment in which an elephant bids farewell to a comrade dead. John Chaney, of 63 years, did a safari in Botswana with his wife when they encountered the carcass of the animal, surrounded by vultures and hyenas. While the safari guide called the Park Rangers to come remove the horns of the animal, so as not to attract poachers, another elephant approached the body. It was a female, who chased away the animals around the corpse, and then, in a touching gesture, wrapped his face to one of the horns of the dead elephant. The tour group was brought to tears when the female set up vigil to the body for hours.Chaney, who photographed the image, said he never had to endure anything like, in all the years I have visited Africa. "We were driving, when the Park Ranger explained that an elephant had migrated away from his group to die. This is typical in elephants when they get too old, "he added. The elephant in question wasn't seen for several days, until the Group encountered this carcass â" who should be in that condition for two or three days. There were about 20 vultures and hyenas 10 back of the body. The Group of tourists continued their journey through the park before returning to the place where the animal had been seen casting several hours before. To his astonishment, the female remained in exactly the same position, touching the companion.Although the behavior of this specimen is unusual, the elephants are known to pay homage to their dead. Chaney revealed that the thrill of wild animals in Africa is one of the reasons that have led to visit the region every two or three years. "You can see many of the human emotions in the magnificent animals of Africa."The photo in question, taken in 2007, was disqualified from the National Geographic Traveler photo contest 2012, due to the date on which it was taken, but received a special distinction.
