Mother Hippo elephant can stand up to defend Cubs

Photographer Rian Van Schalkwyk was in the right place at the right time when an elephant has progressed rapidly to a piece of grass, an oasis in the reserve of Windhoek, Namibia. As a first step, the animal lived "happily" with 20 hippos who shared the meal until they were upset.

"I was taking pictures of hippos in the water. Some employees came to put grass for the animals, due to the lack of food because of the dry season.  Immediately, about 20 hippos out of the water and came to the herb, as well as a male elephant, "explained the photographer.

During some time, elephant and hippopotamus lived "happily", until the first became "agitated" and aggressive, as hippos arrived closer.

When the mother Hippo realized that her babies were in danger, put in front of the elephant and was facing â€" literally â€" by the huge animal. Gave a back on itself and fell on his feet, according to Van Schalkwyk.

The Hippo females can weigh 1.5 tons, but they seem pretty mild for the strength of an elephant. Still, the mission was accomplished: the Cubs escaped into the water and MOM, after all, was unharmed in the assault.

For Van Schalkwyk, who works in Rundu, a small town in northern Namibia-near the border with Angola â€" was an unforgettable day. "After the incident, the elephant was in place and shook his head. The hippo's back to water. It was amazing, all very fast. The elephants are very fast in short distances, but I felt sorry for the mother Hippo. It was very emotional to see her defend the Cubs, be faced with a much larger animal, "concluded the photographer.
