Errand boy: "it's not easy to be an entrepreneur, but the effort has compensated"

On top of a yellow WaSP, a man walks through the streets of Lisbon. Now stop at the pharmacy, now goes to the supermarket. It can also be seen walking dogs and less occasionally driving cars. The description may seem of any inhabitant of Lisbon and of their daily chores. But think again-if this is the errand boy.

Luís Campos is the mentor of the errand boy, project launched at the end of 2012. Louis, of 34 years, graduated in Marketing and advertising in 2002. In the last decade almost always worked as freelancer. In a situation of unemployment has decided to implement a project that was on paper since 2007: create a professional courier service and delivery.

The idea for the business was born of simple actions. "As had some free time, my friends and family sometimes asked me to run errands. They didn't have time and I don't like to be stopped, gave a hand ". The idea was born.

In addition to transporting small orders from one end to another of Lisbon, the busboy comes to every small business you need, whether walking pets, take the animals to the vet, go shopping, go to the pharmacy, take the car to the inspection. All this while the customer is on your job, which makes the accomplishment of these tasks.

A boy and a girl selling time

After almost two years of the launch of the business, the errand boy grew. If at the beginning the service was only provided in the municipalities of Lisbon, now covers the municipalities bordering the capital, as well as the Setúbal peninsula. But the bulk of the service remains in the Centre of Lisbon. And there is no longer just an errand boy, but a boy and a girl, because Luis now has the help of a collaborator, Ana Regional, who joined the project in February this year. And I don't work at home, but in a space.

Luís Campos account that the balance is very positive. "Never in my life felt so accomplished. Have been difficult times because a business requires a lot of dedication. It's not easy to be an entrepreneur, but the effort has paid off, "says the errand boy. "One of my dreams was able to stay in my country and somehow contribute with something. At this point we are already two people on active duty to escape unemployment statistics and performed for doing something they like. "

The growth also has been sustained. "In addition to the regulars, we have an average of 20 new clients emerge every month", reveals Louis. But be errand boy also has its drawbacks. "We have a big barrier is cultural. We're not used to delegate something to people we don't know. Gradually we're getting through this. We bet a lot on creativity to be able to catch people's attention and bring them to trial, "he explains.

Pastéis de Belém delivered to door

In addition to the messages and courier service, the errand boy now has several partnerships. One of them is with Pastéis de Belém. So, if you live in Lisbon may have the mythical pasties delivered to the door whenever you want without having to travel to Bethlehem and wait in queues. But the busboy also with other partners, such as with the bakery do Restelo "the Bald", which allows delivery of croissants and palmiers. Or even with Mr. António, master of works; with iClínica, for repair of smartphones, tablets, and other multimedia devices; with the workshop Creative sewing, sewing services and with Lili Cherry, a flower designer.

"All the US services partnerships are chosen judiciously by the analysis of certain standards. We're recommending and whether clients trust us, will also rely on our partners, "explains Luis.

The errand boy is definitely a project to continue, as stated by his mentor. Future objectives of Louis and Ana will go through the establishment of new partnerships but also the release of errand boy Oeiras. However, the main objective is to take the delivery boy to the port by the end of 2014.

Macabre invention transforms pets on drones

The imagination is the most important characteristics of human beings but, when used for purposes less humanists, can generate shock waves bigger or smaller. In this case, the creativity of inventors Dutchmen Arjen Beltman and Bart Jensen led them to create drones made from stuffed animals.

According to BBC News, the duo started by using a cat embalmed in a radio controlled device; then proceeded to an ostrich embalmed. This month, Beltman and Jensen built a smaller model, to accommodate the hamster Pepeijn Bruins of 13 years â€" the animal had just died of cancer.

"I loved him and I'd like to feel attached to me or see him hiding in my clothes," explained BBC Pepeijn.

According to the BBC, the next job of the Dutch duo's for putting a motor boat on a shark. All work will be featured on the TV Show All Creatures Great and Stuffed â€" where do we sign the petition to stop these grotesque practices?

According to the duo, this is a way to honor departed pets â€" and the reader agrees with this theory?

USA: tree survives at the top of a court since 1870

For several years a simple tree brings tourists from all parts of the United States to Greensburg, Indiana. But this is not a tree either, actually. Situated on top of a court, the 35 m above the ground, the tree can be seen since 1870 and her weird presence is why myths.

According to Michelle Hess, who works at the Beach Tiki Bar and Grill, just in front of the Court, one of the myths claims that have been a bird to bring the seed of the tree â€" a mulberry; his colleague Scott Anderson, however, has another theory: the wind took the seed to the top of the Court.

More curious is the fact that the tree continue to subsist without soil and water â€" and its longevity, of course. Even if not everything is what it seems â€" but we're already there.

According to Michelle Hess, the tree brings thousands of tourists to the small town of 11 thousand inhabitants, especially on weekends. "I've met people who travel from Alabama to Indiana just to see the tree," explained the Inhabitat.

There's a lot to the people of Greensburg capitalize on this curious phenomenon. Apart from auto-intitularem of "tree City" â€" Tree City â€" they compiled various contents on the mulberry and its history.

It is clear that the original tree, seen for the first time since 1870, no longer exists. She died and was eventually removed in 1888, but two others remained â€" arrived to measure 4.5 feet. Since then, more than 12 trees replaced the first-today she has a gardener just for you.

On the weekend of 26 and 27 of September, in Greensburg, the Tree City Fall Festival-which includes a contest of gastronomy and the election of Miss Tree City. Is an authentic economy rooted in a tree, so that, in principle, we risk seeing a situation like this.

"Sustainable public procurement are under 20%" (with INTERVIEW)

Life + funded and coordinated, in Portugal, by LNEG (Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia), the project Building SPP intends to promote the sustainable public procurement in Europe. Portugal is one of the countries with the lowest percentages of sustainable public procurement â€" below 20% â€" and the Green Savers was realizing why the researcher of LNEG and coordinator of the project in Portugal, Paula Trinity.

What is the project Building SPP and what are the main conclusions so far?

The project Building-SPP intends to develop and implement activities that result in the promotion and integration of sustainable purchasing practices in Portugal and Greece, through assistance to public authorities in defining a shopping strategy that contributes to its environmental and social policies: the promotion and cooperation between public authorities; and promoting greater involvement between public authorities and suppliers.

The project has developed and tested methodologies and tools to define strategies for purchases that contribute to the objectives and commitments arising from environmental and social policies of organizations in pilot projects. On the other hand, promoted awareness, collaboration and training of buyers and suppliers on purchases sustainable.

The project is funded by the LIFE + Programme and is a partnership involving experts from organizations in Portugal and in Greece.

What are the main results of this phase of the initiative?

The Building project was eminently practical dimension SPP, because the main objective was to demonstrate that public authorities can make sustainable shopping in Portugal, do it in a systematic way and that the knowledge for that are available.

Meanwhile created a sustainable shopping network (Network Search + Portugal), with about 30 participating organizations, in Portugal, where buyers can play experiences and acquire knowledge. This exchange of knowledge resulted in a catalogue of good practices, a compilation of cases sustainable shopping with Portuguese public authorities.

An approach was made to suppliers, where they explored the extent to which sustainability criteria can be met by Portuguese companies and ensure their competitiveness. Working groups were held between buyers and suppliers for food and catering services, construction, cleaning products and services, copy and printing paper, printing and computer equipment. It was concluded that there is a wide availability of suppliers but that, at the level of small suppliers, there is still a lack of knowledge of the environmental aspects associated with their products and services.

It was further developed an instrument for the implementation of a sustainable procurement strategy in an organization, which was tested in Loures, Torres Vedras and Lipor. Under this pilot projects hiring processes were developed with sustainability criteria (Torres Vedras-pest control products, uniforms, school feeding; Loures-surveillance service, school transportation, pest control service; LIPOR-cleaning service).

With these practical results, we wanted to develop recommendations for the Portuguese and Greek strategy of sustainable shopping, once the grocery sustainable approach in organizations can and should be supported by public policies.

Government purchases represent 16% of EU GDP. How many of these purchases are sustainable?

A study carried out by the EU in 2012 on the implementation level of ecological shopping in Europe of 27 shows that Portugal, Ireland, Poland, Czech Republic, Finland, Slovenia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Latvia and Estonia have a level of implementation under 20%. This in terms of the number of contracts with environmental criteria (green procurement).

In terms of the value of contracts entered into in 2009-2010, with 10 groups of environmental criteria for products and services, Portugal presents a level of implementation under 20%.

How can these public administrations to revolutionise the sector linked to the green economy and sustainability? In other words, what percentage of the buying public would have to be "ecological" so that the green economy sector generated a number of interesting recipes and create thousands of jobs?

There is still much to be done, both in terms of organizations that claim to be pioneers in this process of change, both in terms of the generalization of sustainable shopping practices in organizations. The project Building SPP gave, so to speak, a kickoff and showed that it is possible to do. Now it is necessary to disseminate these results with the organizations, take them to consider sustainable purchases as a priority. Because in many cases a higher requirement on the part of the public administration can and must correspond to a better preparation and qualification of suppliers and therefore a greater competitiveness of the business fabric. It is in this perspective that sustainable purchases should be considered.

The second question I would have to be answered after a study on this subject.

Why will debate the Swedish case, specifically, in Congress?

The Sweden is one of the most advanced countries in terms of sustainable purchasing, with a level of implementation of more than 80%, both in number of contracts either in the value of contracts. Can therefore be an example to Portugal. The idea of the Conference was to present the example of a very advanced Country (Sweden) and another very close (Spain), with the aim to demonstrate to participants that Portugal also has good examples that can be disseminated.

The theme of sustainable public procurement is an issue on the table for some time. What has stuck to its implementation on the ground?

An approach of sustainable shopping in an organization requires changes in own organization and the manner of conducting and planning public procurement. This is the main obstacle, but the role of LNEG has been to demonstrate that it is possible to make, with clear advantages in terms of planning, increasing the internal involvement in organizations, increasing the transparency of procurement processes, improving the image of the organizations policy and contributing to the strategic objectives of the environmental and social organizations. In terms of costs there may also be advantages, if we consider not only the cost of the product or service, but we include the costs of operation, maintenance and end of life.

Sustainable Procurement Conference: A challenge for the public administration will be held on September 16 at the Museu do Oriente in Lisbon. You can sign up at this link.

Flower carpet honors Turks from Belgium

Every two years, in the month of August, the main square of Brussels becomes a giant carpet of flowers, a tribute to the various communities or important actions of recent years.

Last month, the honoree was the Turkish community of Belgium, which led hundreds of gardeners working for a sole purpose: to put 750 thousand flowers in a carpet covered by 300 Begonias.

Begonias were chosen for their robustness, resistance to bad weather and longevity, which allows the rug to stay several days unscathed. This flower is used traditionally in beauty pageants and parties, with 80% of its production is exclusively the area of Ghent, Belgium. Every year, approximately 60 million Begonias planted and are mostly exported to the Netherlands, France and United States.

The giant puzzle took a few hours to be completed-the flowers have to be tied to each other not to fly with the wind. See the final result.

For 20 years, the WWTP de Alcântara was the open, accumulating bad odors and complaints from all that by passerby and near lived. Built in the years 80, this wastewater treatment plant has always been badly seen by locals, but in two years, everything changed.

In 2012, this gateway of Lisbon was targeted for refurbishment and opened an amazing green roof â€" multi award-winning â€" which already put aside the cement. "We thought interesting to translate relief from hillside, put him in a way more similar to original", explained to the green economy project architect, Frederick Valsassina.

According to the charge, were also introduced multiple paths in the structure, which serve to bind to the WWTP and the administration of Live.

In fact, it was the legislation that imposed changes to the improvement of water treatment, but the roof had green as a backdrop a choice linked to the aesthetic and environmental concerns.

"To have the original topography of the Valley of Alcantara, this cover was bent several times, to respond to the organs of WWTP machines but also to create a gradient of colours and volumes" continued the architect Valsassina.

The species that make up the flower beds and terraces were selected according to the needs of maintenance â€" species that got along with this type of coverage and that pressupusessem a minimum of treatment. The plants are watered by water treated by the WWTP.

According to Antonio Frazão, director of the WWTP of Alcantara, the coverage still goes through a testing period, but will be available soon to be visited â€" are three hectares green.
