Jardim Botânico de Lisboa celebrates 135 years of history

Considered, at one time, one of the best in Europe, the Botanical Garden of Lisbon is one of the most important reserves of exotic species. Opened in 1878, the Garden celebrates 135 years next day on November 11.

Located between what is now the Avenida da Liberdade and the Príncipe Real district, the garden was planted between 1858 and 1878 in the former Royal College fence of nobles to support the teaching of Botany at the Polytechnic School. Built by the School Board, overseeing the installation of the garden went to José Maria Grande, Andrade Corvo and the Conde de Ficalho, which gathered a collection of more than 10,000 plants.

Over four hectares it is possible to find species of the various continents and the silence and tranquility are a constant presence. For these traits, the Botanical Garden of Lisbon has always constituted an important place of recreation and stroll among the student population and the residents of the surrounding areas, despite having been designed for teaching support

Currently, the Botanical Garden is integrated at the National Museum of Natural history and the University of Lisbon. In 2010, was considered a national monument.

Of the 135 anniversary celebrations plan part a photographic Marathon, planting a rose Bush "Beautiful", a concert by the Traditional singing group of the Instituto Superior Técnico and still a magusto.

However, the Botanical Garden won a birthday present, to be the big winner of the participatory budget Lisbon. The project for the recovery of the space was the most voted proposal by inhabitants in this year's Edition, which will allow for about € 500 million from the budget and activity plan of the city for 2014.

In total, there were registered more than 35,922 votes to 208 Assembly proposals made by citizens, and the proposal for the renovation of the garden got the most votes with 7,553 votes. The approved project involves the renovation of paths and water circulation system, the installation of terraces and kiosks, the creation of an area of lawn for recreation, the creation of a Mediterranean garden and the opening of the gate which gives access to the Praça da Alegria.
