Gap of 800 meters discovered beneath the ice of Greenland

Under the dense layer of the Greenland ice sheet hides a huge Canyon, comparable, in parts, the American Grand Canyon, announced yesterday, researchers at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom.

The vast and so far unknown Canyon will have 800 meters. "It's amazing to discover something, when some people think that the Earth's surface is very well mapped," explained Jonathan Bamber, principal for the study.

It is recalled that scientists had mapped, last year, a huge Valley buried in Antarctic ice and, in 2009, a mountain the size of the Alps, in the same location.

The study used radars that penetrate the ice and was developed with fellow researchers from Canada and Italy. The Gorge will have 750 miles long and lies in the central part and North Greenland. He is buried in two miles of ice.

The Ridge will have the size of the Rhône river, between France and Switzerland, and was crossed by an ancient River, which caused erosion on the rocks, there are 3.5 million years ago. Probably, the gap still plays an important role in some de-icing drainage underneath the ice sheet.
