19TH century railway carriage reused in ecological House

Simon Conder Associates was responsible for an amazing draft reformulation: he converted a 19TH-century train carriage in a modern house carbon negative. The structure is now part of a group of five Beach dwellings called El Ray, located near Kent, in the United Kingdom.

The original structure was deconstructed but continues to highlight architectural potential. Has become a cosy House that uses wind and solar energy to create the ideal thermal conditions and an atmosphere of dream for an entire family.

The new housing exists within a highly isolated wooden structure, with the former coach as central point of space. Fully glazed elevations combined with smaller apertures ensure stunning views over the adjacent lighthouse, the coast guard station and the nuclear power station. The beauty of the place is fully revealed through the view of the beach and the sea accessible from an observation deck on the sloping roof.

The House has thick, well insulated walls and ceilings and floors that minimize heat loss and the annual electricity bill. The outer covering and the deck are made from a certified wood called Itauba, while the floors and the walls use a certified plywood.

The Inhabitat reports that, during the winter, can be used a salamander, like passive solar gain supplement, combined with floor heating â€" this powered by a wind turbine.

Architects expect the House to generate more electricity than it consumes throughout the year â€" the excess energy will follow then for the national network.
