First floor of the Eiffel Tower will be transformed into a sustainable space

The project to renovate the first floor of the best-known monument of Paris began in 2012 and is expected to be completed later this year. Borne by the atelier-Rivière, Moatti said draft renovation of the first floor of the Eiffel Tower intends to transform the space into a place of entertainment and learning. With a contemporary design, the transformation will contemplate the introduction of various sustainable systems.

The installation of several solar systems, hydraulic and wind will allow reuse natural resources and reduce the ecological footprint of the space. So, will be installed solar panels which will allow you to provide energy and lighting with LED lamps. Will also be installed four windmills with vertical axes that will feed a water turbine and will be used a drainage system to collect rainwater.

With a budget of €24,9 million, the project includes the demolition and rebuilding of parts of the first floor and the pavilions Ferrié, hosting the welcoming lobby, shops and a restaurant. After being completed, the main reception area in front of the elevators will also be renovated and enlarged, with the addition of conference rooms, a multipurpose amphitheater and open-air museum route referred to in Inhabitat.

The floor of the first floor will be in glass and will be installed so that the balconies to 57 feet off the ground can be easily overlooked when. Equally important as the renewal project are the new access facilities that will be implemented, which will allow people with mobility difficulties visit the first floor.

Spider robots follow Lantern-shaped people to light my way

There are more and more robots for different purposes. Alvaro Cassinelli, an artist based in Tokyo, just to give you one more: robots transformed into lanterns â€" but a little scary.

The Toro-bots, as they called it, have the shape of a typical Japanese lantern, only mounted on top of a species of spider legs, which makes robots in bizarre objects. In addition to walking, the Toro-bots can still dance and emit flashes of light, as if from sirens.

The robots can be programmed to emit light at a fixed location or to follow certain person and illuminate the path, and the path is controlled via a tablet. Each Torus-bot has a "personality" of its own, since through infrared can "feel" the environment around you.

Additionally, the robots can be controlled collectively or individually. The Toro-bots were designed initially to illuminate an exhibition â€" Digital Shock â€" in the French Cultural Institute in Tokyo. The spider robots were built by an American company and each costs about €690.

The Tasmanian Orchid that seems Duffy Duck

In Tasmania there is a native Orchid that resembles the famous cartoon of the Looney Tunes, the Duffy Duck. Famous for its similarities with the cartoon, this orchid is also known as the "Flying Duck".

This plant can also be found in Southern Australia and in Queensland. However, their small size â€" about 50 cm tall â€" makes difficult its identification in the wild. Usually, this Orchid blooms between September and January.

Already the Duffy Duck was introduced into the children's imagination in the 1930, to replace other cartoons that were more popular earlier in the Decade, such as Mickey Mouse and Popeye. Throughout the ages the image of the Duffy Duck was suffering some changes, but his voice remained the same feature.

San Francisco bans bottled water indoors from October

The city of San Francisco, known for setting trends in the United States, unanimously approved a ban on the consumption of bottled water in events with more than 100 people located in public places-like concerts.

The prohibition shall enter into force on 1 October for enclosed spaces of public property and in 2016 for events in locations open. Sporting events that require a large consumption of water as the City Marathon, will be excluded from these restrictions, the same happening with major events such as Gay Pride Parade, which has until 2018 to fit.

Chamber meeting where the decision was made, Alderman David Chiu explained that the bottled water industry, which emerged only in the years 90, cause untold environmental damage.

According to him, one of the goals of legislation is to make people think about their waste. "Before 1990, and for centuries, people could stay hydrated without this industry", explained Chiu.

"We are all aware of the importance of combating climate change. San Francisco is taking a leadership role in the fight for the environment, "explained Chiu to the San Francisco Chronicle.

According to this Association and other critics of the measure, the ban will lead many people to decide to buy alcoholic beverages at concerts and other events.

Paris: public transport free of charge three days to combat pollution

Have you ever considered the turnout that public transport from Lisbon or Porto have this weekend, if they were free? That's the reality that tourists and residents in Paris will be already from today, as a way of encouraging motorists to leave their vehicles at home.

The measure comes at a time when the French capital is suffering very high levels of pollution, explains the Less A Car, being that the air will remain exceptionally harmful to health until the weekend.

Jean-Paul Huchon, Chief of transport inspection agency in Paris and surrounding areas, said that transport will be free from today until Sunday night, due to "significant risks to the health of residents" posed by pollution.

The level of the index on the overall quality of the air in Paris, yesterday, was approximately the same as in Beijing, one of the most polluted cities in the world. In total, more than 30 French departments were the subject of alerts for maximum levels of pollution, leading the Minister of Ecology, Philippe Martin, to qualify the air quality as "an emergency and a priority for the Government".

The city of Caen, in the North, also decided to free public transport for three days, due to pollution. Reims in the Northeast, will do the same on Friday. The lack of wind, plus cold nights, followed by mild days, has contributed to the severe air pollution.

At night, the land cools, as the atmosphere warms up during the day, due to the Sun, which means the particulate pollutants emitted by automobiles or heated get stuck under a layer of hot air and cannot ascend or be dispersed.

As a result, monitoring centres reported particularly strong concentrations of particles with a diameter of less than 10 microns, PM10, particles in the air designated.

In neighboring Belgium, on the other hand, the pollution will also affect the day-to-day lives of citizens. The authorities have reduced the maximum permitted speed on the main routes, in order to try to reduce the heavy concentration of particulate pollutants in the atmosphere.

Notre-Dame Cathedral replaced conventional lighting by LED

Since it began to be built in 1163, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame has had several types of lighting: from the candles to light bulbs. The last type of lighting this Gothic Cathedral will receive are LED light bulbs â€" more than 400.

For fans of dark and characteristic architecture of the churches, the new lighting design includes areas of half-light, which allow you to save the contemplative lighting traditional. Additionally, the LEDs are adjustable through computer, which allows you to respond to the different needs of space lighting.

With this replacement, it will be possible to save around 80% in energy consumption, since the LED bulbs use only 30 kW, compared with the previously used 140 refers to Atlantic Cities.

Who says the monuments cannot adapt to the new realities sustainable? See the new lighting (Photo 1 to 9) and the old (Photo 10.

Foam mattresses are harmful to the health of babies

What is that mattresses of cribs, changing tables and chairs have in common? Are used by babies and all have foam-and this is problematic. The foam used in mattresses and seats release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the environment. The VOCS come from several compounds used in the manufacture of these objects: resins, solvents, adhesives and catalysts that continue to vaporize long after the manufacturing process.

Chronic exposure to low levels of VOCS is related to allergies, asthma and lung infections in babies. However, a new investigation revealed an entirely different reality. A team of scientists at the University of Texas conducted a new study that quantified the current amount of VOCs are released to the environment where the baby is.

The team analyzed 20 crib mattresses, both new and used, manufactured with polyurethane foam or polyester. In a test Chamber, as the size similar to a baby's room, heated with a cylinder parra mimic the heat released by the child, which accelerates the release of VOCS, the researchers compared the values of VOCS in the room and on the child's breathing zone, approximately 1 to 2.5 cm above the surface of the mattress.

According to Treehugger, scientists have identified 30 different VOCS and some that are classified as environmental pollutants. On average, the researchers concluded, the new mattresses emit four times more VOCs older mattresses.

However, more alarmingly, the team found that the amount of VOCS was significantly higher in the breathing zone of the child than on the environment. gral Such indicator is alarming, since babies tend to sleep 12 to 2:0 pm per day.

However, there are alternatives to foam mattresses, like latex, the natural rubber, organic cotton, eucalyptus fiber, among others.

Floating capsule filters seawater and air despolui

There's futuristic projects designed for the well-being of the population, not looking for sustainability. Others, like this one, may not yet be out of the paper, but, for the sake of mankind, should be already under construction.

We speak of the Bloom, a project of the French Atelier Sitbon Architectes who was a finalist in the international competition the Architizer + Awards, in the category architecture + weather. The project seeks to answer, through the bold design, the three problems of humanity â€" lack of water, air pollution and increase in mean sea level.

Designed specifically for the Indian Ocean, this giant capsule and partially submerged is a species of aquatic farm that promises to clean the air, convert sea water into drinking water and monitor sea level rise.

The main reason of the capsule is to mitigate the effects of climate change. To this end, will be home to giant aquariums of phytoplankton-microscopic beings that inhabit the ocean and have a major role in the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which will serve as organic greenhouses.

In addition, the structure will have a central weather alerts, able to warn the occurrence or approximation of seaquakes, tsunamis and other environmental disasters. Here are some pictures.

Monitored by international NGO shark caught in Póvoa do Varzim

Remember of Lydia, a great white shark who is close to go down in history as the first of its kind to cross the Atlantic Ocean â€" being monitored, of course? One of the other sharks monitored by Ocearch, the NGO that is driving the project, should have been caught in Portugal.

According to the BBC, the shark, called Rizzilient, was "apparently caught by commercial fishermen". The shark, a female mako of 1.5 meters, is one of several animals that are monitored via satellite by the NGO.

"The latest satellite information Rizzilient shows-on land, in the city of Póvoa do Varzim, North of Portugal", explains the BBC.

Millions of sharks die every year as a result of hunting specifically for removing their fins, highly valuable in the Asian market for shark fin soup or in alternative medicine.

Click here to see the route of the Rizzilient.

The project Ocearch monitors almost 150 sharks, including great white sharks, hammerhead sharks, Tiger sharks and other species. One of the objectives of the project is to move away from academic research â€" sometimes very competitive, betting on a disruptive approach to research linked to the seas and make all the collected data to the public.

A day of air traffic in Europe

On a summer's day, about 30 thousand flights across European airspace. To show the various routes of these flights and the way they are managed, the entity that controls the air traffic from the United Kingdom has created a video that, in two minutes, condenses traffic 12:0 am.

The video in question consists of data collected by the British air radars on June 21, 2013 combined with the information of the plan for European aviation day on June 28 last year. Subsequently, through computer programs, information of longitude, latitude and altitude was converted into bright spots that were positioned with precision on the satellite images from the European space.

Although the video create a visual spectacle agravável is also quite enlightening when it comes to carbon dioxide emissions, because the aviation industry is that more CO2 emits. In addition to air pollution, noise pollution and still account for fossil fuels used.

In total, the distance covered by these 30 000 flights â€" about 25 million nautical miles-is the equivalent to circumnavigate the Earth 998 times or 104 trips to the Moon.

Great white shark can make history and become the first to cross the Atlantic

A great white shark, named Lydia, like going down in history as the first of its kind to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The animal, a female of 4.4 meters, has toured more than 30.5 million miles since it began to be monitored through a scientific project, in March 2013.

Currently, the shark will be near the Atlantic rift, about 1,600 miles off the coast of Cornwall, in the United Kingdom, and Ireland â€" which also puts the animal near the Spanish and Portuguese coast.

If you continue to swim at the speed that the average has done, Lydia could reach the British coast soon, thus becoming the first white shark crossing the Atlantic way monitored.

The animal has been followed through the Ocearch project, which aims to gather data about moving, biology and health of sharks. The project aims to then use the information to not only protect animals but also to promote education and public safety.

See the current location of Lydia, which, moreover, the Ocearch do you think you're pregnant.

"Technically, the Lydia crossed the Atlantic to cross the Atlantic Ridge, which hasn't done," Gregory Skomal indicates, one of the researchers involved in the project. However, the investigator believes that the shark is closer to Europe than North America.

The first conclusion of the study explains that American agriculture increasingly wins money. In 2012, the American farmers sold $ 250 honorarium billion (R $ 927 billion) in products, 33% more than in 2007. In fact, this number is not surprising, since prices are higher, but the study questions who's really making money in this sector â€" some experts say it is not in the pockets of farmers that this money is in â€" and that explains some of the remaining data in the report.

The study draws attention to the growth of large agricultural estates and medium farms disappeared. The number of small farms has remained in line with the 2007 numbers, but the truth is that these are not making money. Almost half â€" 1 million-2.1 million of u.s. farms rely on a family member the full time, but even these don't make money, even in more prosperous agricultural.

On the other hand, the number of people who identified other occupation aside from agriculture fell 9% compared to 2007, but these numbers are not positive. "I think that this number reflects the lack of jobs in rural communities," explained the Civil Eats Katherine Ozer, Executive Director of the National Family Farm Coalition.

Farmers are older

The Census found that the American farmers are older, with an average age of 58 years, and that this number has been growing for 30 years. Still, the number of farmers between 25 and 34 years has risen.

"The number of young farmers is growing, but the range between 35 and 44 is lower," said Traci Bruckner, of the Center for Rural Affairs.

The number of agricultural farms too is decreasing in relation to 2007 â€" 4%-as well as male farmers (4%) and women (6%). Still, there are more women who say that the farmer is their only job (125 thousand against 122 thousand in 2007). "There are more and more women to follow a career in a farmer," said Bruckner.

Interestingly, these women are older, mostly between 55 and 75 years. Which means you can are entering agriculture as a second career or to cultivate some land inherited.

Agriculture as an obligation

According to the Guardian newspaper, Americans Cook less and less and Cook became a hobby â€" people cook with the chefs on TV. The loss of cooking skills means that American citizens are increasingly distant from farmers and, on the other hand, about 40% of their meals are lonely.

On the other hand, Americans don't see the agricultural career with good eyes, and those who choose to are, almost always, obliged to do so.

All these data have a meaning: that still make more money, the agriculture sector, in the United States, goes through a period of major challenges and will have to reinvent itself quickly. As in Europe, in fact.

Cat lover spends € 25,200 to transform the House into a playground for cats

A Californian, who remains anonymous, decided that his home belonged to him as much as to their 18 cats and decided to spend € 25,200 to make housing more suitable for the cats. The remodeling was done by a specialized company and includes airfare for cats, poles for cats sharpen their nails and artificial vegetation for the cats hide.

More costly changes, referred to Inhabitat, involved the introduction of a spiral staircase that spans two floors and several uneven running through shelves several divisions, allowing the animals to follow people from room-to-room.

Despite all the additions to improve the comfort of the felines, housing looks normal from the outside, with a garden and several trees. Once inside, the House is completely adapted to the cats but also to humans, thereby facilitating the coexistence of the two species.  In the remodeling of housing was also introduced a ventilation system that ensures the circulation of air amounts sufficient to prevent unwanted odors.

Environmental documentary inspires California to ban concerts of orcas

Inspired by the controversial documentary River Blackfish, which explores the history of orcas in captivity and death of a handler of Seaworld, in 2010, the Democrat Richard Bloom has proposed legislation to ban the shows of orcas in California â€" specifically, at SeaWorld San Diego.

The proposed law, which was known on Friday, also proposes a ban on the import and export of orcas, according to UT San Diego.

"There is no justification for the continued maintenance of orcas in captivity, for the sake of entertainment," explained Bloom. "These beautiful creatures are too big and clever to stay confined in small cement tanks throughout their lives," he continued.

The draft law will allow all orcas withdrawals continue to be visited by people, but not for entertainment activities, defined as "all the public views with timetables and that are characterized by music or other sound effects, with choreography or training, or even unprotected contact between humans and orcas".

Whenever possible, keep the document, orcas should be drawn to the sea. The proposal needs a simple majority to pass, but this should not be easy, said the UT San Diego.

Since the release of the film River Blackfish, which was first seen at Sundance festival, the Sea World has already been boycotted by musicians and other artists.

Saint Petersburg has a new sustainable airport

Pulkovo airport in St. Petersburg, is already working. Designed by Grimshaw Aechitects, the space maintains the characteristic traits of the atelier â€" practicality and details of construction, associated with sustainability.

The new space has a cover that resembles a wooden origami and the interior spaces are spacious and bright, taking advantage of the natural light as much as possible. The Pulkovo airport is the first phase of a larger project to improve the transport infrastructure of Saint Petersburg and make the city as a gateway to Russia.

The Grimshaw Architects have won an international competition, in 2007, to design the Pulkovo airport. The new terminal is expected to receive 12 million passengers per year, referred to in Inhabitat. However, when the second phase of the project is completed in 2017, the space must be capable of an annual volume of 17 million passengers.

The design of the new airport was inspired by the city of St. Petersburg, with interconnected areas that are reminiscent of the Islands and the bridges of the city. The roof and the roof were designed to withstand large temperature fluctuations. The facades and Windows were optimized to capture as much light and prevent overheating in the summer. Some of the facades also include panels that allow you to control the amount of sunlight.

"This building represents a starting point for the Grimshaw. We are known for our significant structures and by attention to detail. Here, we wanted to keep all these elements, and our interest in sustainability, but also trying to make the building into a more defined and spacious, "said Mark Middleton, project manager of the Grimshaw.

Interactive toys interfere with the development of children?

It is common to see a child talking to legos, Barbies and Action Man or nenucos. However, these toys do not respond or interact in any way. But this reality is changing.

The advent technology brought a new reality for children when it comes to jokes. Interactive programs already exist, with various characters, who keep dialogues with children or programs, in the form of animals, which are very real. But these programs are beneficial or harmful to children's development in the 21st century?

For a new generation of children, this type of interactive toys can be the future of games. Although, in the future, we can watch many of the scenarios that we used to watch science fiction movies, there are other more immediate concerns. Since it has been hard to study the side effects of this new trend among toys, nobody knows exactly how these objects can affect a child's development-for better, worse or have a neutral effect.

To better understand these impacts, which are not yet scientifically proven, the Mashale spoke with several builders of toys and child development specialists.

This type of toy is aimed mostly at children in the early stages of mental development and, although there is no scientific evidence, theories about how the interactive toys can affect children are many.

Oren Jacob worked at Pixar for more than 20 years. Later, after leaving the company, created with a friend, who also worked at Pixar, a company, the Toy Talk. The most famous toy is Winston Show, a interactive program in the form of a cartoon that listen to children and interacts with them. According to Jacob, this toy can stimulate language development â€" which translates into extra points when it comes to persuading on the purchase of the product. Once children start talking love to have conversations, even meaningless, the program allows them to talk about what you want the cartoon will listen and always respond. "You can express yourself out loud and have a game partner that responds always and never tires is a very attractive option," says Jacob. "That's how you learn to speak".

Lauren Sherman, researcher, agrees that this kind of toys can help to a certain extent. This researcher working in the Children's Digital Media Center, in Los Angeles, a research lab that focuses on the effects of digital media on the development of children and young people. While recognizing the benefits of these toys, Sherman notes that interact with a program is not the same thing as interact with people, then that is not entirely advisable to replace human contact by contact with interactive programs.

Kaveri Subrahmanyam, associate director of the same laboratory, indicates that children tend to form ties with the characters and interactive programmes, the investigator, considers that these emotional ties may interfere with the "informational development of empathy", since contact with a wide range of emotions is smaller. Despite the benefits and harms of interactive toys are not fully proven, researchers advise parents to regrarem the use of these toys for children.

Norway will cut part of the island where took place the massacre of Utoya

Almost two years after the bombing, the Norway will perpetuate the victims of Anders Breivik through three memorials. The memorials will be designed by Jonas Dahlberg-the winner of a competition called Memorial Sites After 22 July, destined to choose the artist to create the memorials.

The three works will have a cost of about €3,3 million for the Government in Oslo. On July 22, 2011, recalled, 77 people were killed: eight in the explosion of a car bomb with a bomb in the Centre of Oslo and 69 in the massacre on the island of Utoya.

The most interesting of the three memorials commissioned will be of Sørbråten peninsula, called Memory Wound (Wound of memory). For this monument, Dahlberg will cut a piece of land on the peninsula, separating it through a channel of three and a half meters of width of the main portion of Earth. The work will be a "symbolic wound" in the landscape refers to the Verge.

Another of the monuments will understand 100 cubic meters of rock extracted from Sørbråten which will be transferred to the Government quarter in Norwegian capital, where the memorial will mark the spot where the car bomb was detonated.

Additionally, the artist will still build a temporary path between Gubbegata and the Deichmanske library. Subsequently, Dahlberg will utilize the peninsula cutting trees to create a permanent Amphitheater in the Government quarter, called "Time and Movement" (Time and motion ").

The Memorial will be inaugurated on July 22, 2015 at the fourth anniversary of the attacks, and the Amphitheatre will be opened later.

Celebrities and top designers are using fur

Despite the angry reaction on the part of the defenders of animals, many are still the public figures who continue to wear fur â€" even those who had promised to never use, like Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford (pictured), referred to the Guardian.

Despite an appeal by the designer John Bartlett to stop using animal skins, several clothing brands like Dolce Gabbana &, Alexander McQueen, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Tom Ford have all continued to use skins for the latest season sets.

Although companies like H&M, Topshop and Calvin Klein have banned the use of skins, these may be increasingly to be used.

During this month will be held in the Finnish city of Helsinki the largest fur auction ever seen, in which prices are expected to reach record values. Merchants and designers will compete in 11 million mink pelts, 2 million Fox pelts and 1 million skins a variety of wild animals.

Mark Oaten, executive director of the Federation of international trade in Furs, asserts that "the demand for fur is so great that the industry is going through a desperate shortage of products." Second, young Oaten began using skins and the latest technological advancements have supported industry to do much more with them.

Esther: wonderful nut that prompted the owners to create a haven for pigs

The mini pigs are fashionable. As such, Derek Walter and Steve Jenkins, a Toronto couple decided to adopt one of these animals. However, as many people have been deceived into buying these pets, also this couple was wrong and, rather than adopt a mini pig, hosted a normal domestic pig.

Esther, so they called it. This was rejected by the domestic pig farm where he was born, in the summer of 2012. Derek and Steve knew of the case and decided to embrace the animal, thinking that it was a mini pig. However, with the passage of time, the animal continued to grow, until acquiring the proportions of a normal domestic pig.

When they discovered that the animal was not a mini pig, this couple doesn't get rid of the animal, which already belonged to the family, as well as dogs and cats I've ever had.

With more than a year and a half and 180 pounds, Esther â€" which is already a phenomenon on the internet â€" prompted the owners to change their lifestyle: Derek and Steve have become vegetarians. Now, after they find out how magnificent could be a pig, these two Canadians intend to open a refuge for animals this spring.

"The idea is to build an environment that is accessible and interesting enough to attract visitors", says Steve Jenkins, cited by Dodo. "We want to accommodate mostly pigs but we hope to be able to host all kinds of farm animals. We hope to be able to maintain a barn with all or almost all pigs or some sort of House with clean floor, blankets and hay. Anything that stimulates the intelligence of animals and take people to consider us differently. "

The idea for the creation of the refuge came from the feeling that this could provide more space to Esther to play. However, Derek and Steve indicate that educate visitors is the first motivation of the project. "View Esther playing as our dogs was the key to unleash the project. We quickly realized that the pigs are not stupid animals, as you might think, and we want to introduce visitors to this reality in a smooth way. We don't want to fill visitors with vegetarian or propaganda in favour of animal rights, we want to stimulate these aspects through direct contact with the animals ".

In the long run, these two Canadians expect their refuge becomes a unique venue, that people want to visit not only to see the animals but also to play with and learn from them. "Is a huge task and our goals are very aggressive, we know that. But this has become more of a mission than a dream and we will fulfill this mission, "says Jenkins.

Esther follow Facebook.

Robots take over the creative work and I write books and music

Robots and computers already have a large number of applications and progressively go replacing the human being in the most varied tasks. Initially they were used to perform heavy or hazardous work, robots are currently used in creative functions â€" an example of this are the IBM computers that were programmed to cook and create new recipes.

Despite these intelligent robots IBM being just a prototype, you better get used to the idea of having meals made by robots or papers written by computers, which means that these intelligent machines will also be able to override the creatives of the most varied professions.

There are computers that develop creative work for quite some time. Already there are novels written by computers that combine the plots of Tolstoy with the writing style of Murakami, as well as for music and news written by computers, referred to Quartz.

But what makes it possible for machines to operate in these areas considered artistic works? The answer is simple: both the music, how the writing can be transformed into science, through the creation of large databases of music, books and news-and now also recipes, which are converted into binary code.

In recent centuries, the human being has done a great job to improve the culinary arts, but in the future this role may belong to the computers and the IBM project is an example of this. When assessing the variety of existing recipes and analyzing the implicit flavors to certain molecules, computers can create various recipes, as numerous as their databases allow.

Such advances in computational art can allow in the future to order a book written depending on customer preferences or a song composed according to the listener's tastes. And maybe in the near future can be surprised with any exotic recipe created by a computer or even a plate with his name, created from its gastronomic tastes.

Energy-efficient houses will be doing us harm?

A toxic spill caused by poor circulation of air may cause the "sick building syndrome", thinking to be present in new or renovated buildings half English, informs the media of that country.

The most common symptoms are headaches, lethargy, lack of concentration, skin irritation, dry itchy eyes and a runny nose. In rarer cases, mold spores can damage lung tissue and affect breathing

Efficient buildings are an important part in combating the world energy crisis. However, these structures can be a threat to humans because they are likely to retain moist air, in which toxic chemicals can spread.

The new buildings and hermetically sealed can produce moisture and toxic mold dangerous to health. About two-thirds of the most severe crises â€" and potentially fatal â€" of asthma may be triggered by these fungi, which can also cause serious lung infections.

Fungi can also be linked to Parkinson's disease. A recent American study showed that a compound emitted by fungi reduces dopamine levels produced by the brain, something which usually cause symptoms of Parkinson 's, although more research is needed on this matter.

A 17TH century cottage left to abandonment

The country house of Old Crow in Willersey, Herefordshire, United Kingdom, is grade II listed, namely architectural, is considered a particularly important structure and local interest.

However, this certification does not prevent Old Crow is the abandonment since 2009 and, these days, practically in ruins. The building, dating back to the 17th century, was once a village pub and, in recent decades, it housed several generations of the same family.

However, an investigation by the English press, based on photos of the urban Explorer Dan Circa, discovered a building about to collapse and with articles of historic interest unprotected: photographs, newspapers, clothing, furniture or even watches.

"The cabin was for several years in the possession of the same family, and it seems that every generation has filled the home of several articles. There we can find everything, "explained Dan, who confirmed that the building has seven rooms, one of which is completely burnt.

The first reference to the building dates back to 1841, when it was occupied by James Matthews. It is also known that the building was a pub and a pension, having had several names.

"The House is on its last legs, structurally insecure and may fall at any moment," says Dan Circa. "I wish the House and some objects that are inside could be saved. Have an incredible story and should not continue to fester, "he concludes.

"This series is a bit away from conservative and functional documentary that guides my work, but a unique opportunity to admire the power of the Andes through the air, sometimes is a bit abstract, and at one point got lost looking for images drawn by nature. I hope that happens to you, "said the artist.

The pros and cons of traffic congestion

Who every day have to face traffic jams and congested traffic crossing the city considers a horrible trip. However, small business owners and companies located in the congestion zone tend to have differing opinions. On the one hand, these small traders don't like the bad traffic flow will prevent consumers from attending their spaces as soon as possible. On the other, these owners recognize that the places where usually there is frequent traffic jams are good places to establish the business.

Matthias Sweet, researcher in the area of transport of McMaster University, tried to balance the pros and cons of traffic metropolitan areas. The main conclusion of the study, published in the Journal of Transport Geography, indicates that traders tend to leave urban areas with much regional congestion but, curiously, like city areas with local congestion.

"In short, while regional congestion seems to be a hindrance, the local congestion seems to work like a convenience-which implies that they are true the arguments of engineers and economists, indicating that congestion is unfavorable for the economy, but also the arguments of urbanists, who consider the traffic congestion a convenience," reads the study, quoted by the Atlantic Cities.

In a previous study, Sweet it focused on benefits and losses on productivity of a city. The main conclusion of the study, which examined 88 congested urban centers, reveals that the congestion, at an early stage, encourages economic growth but, over time, becomes an obstacle to growth â€" more specifically, when a small movement takes more than 4.5 minutes.

From this point, traffic ceases to lead people to a certain area, and starts to create quality of life for everyone who lives or works there.

The work of Sweet looked specifically for more than 30 thousand business from Philadelphia, United States, 2003 to 2007, and analyzed the local traffic during this period. The American wanted to answer one simple question: companies leave sites that are very congested? The answer is: No.

The responsible discovered that companies believe that congestion in a regional area increase the time between work and home, while Central and local congestion help increase corporate and personal interaction. And the crowding-Soon, are beneficial for a business.

The brand of organic products which have already entered the HP (with video)

When he became unemployed, the 53-year-old Teresa Rodrigues moved from Lisbon to the village of Monte Gordo, in Mafra, and began to figure out what to do to the land that was purchased in 1995. After some recovery work, Teresa ripped with a brand of organic farming, which he called Quinta da Pedra Branca, and called his three sons to the project.

"My husband and I were unemployed and had to have a livelihood. There's nothing like working together, and that's what we did, "explained the entrepreneur to the green economy.

Teresa says that organic farming was an option. "[The products] are healthier and flavorful, although they are more difficult to work," he explained.

The Quinta da Pedra Branca kiln was built with the help of EU funds and, in addition to the four farmers, today already provides employment to others. With a wide variety of cultivated products, the brand has other partners of biological products, which raise their own crops in baskets of Quinta da Pedra Branca.

Hampers distribution has grown in the Lisbon area, with home delivery. The requests are received online, but there are also direct sales in the markets or in the fifth, which always has the doors open.

"What the Quinta da Pedra Branca is doing is an entrepreneurial idea, rejecting a specific audience to reach new people. And that's very important in organic farming. Right now, I'd say it's the most important factor, "explained to the green economy Andrea Pereira, the Agrobio.

Today, Quinta da Pedra Branca, arrived at the business park of Oeiras. Every Wednesday (today), the brand is on HP, leading products to employees of one of the most advanced and technological companies in the world.

Enter the HP was a conquest, and the Protocol signed may be replicated, perhaps, to other companies in other business parks in the greater Lisbon.

Global warming will lead to an increase in the number of crimes along the century

Global warming will not only enhance the melting of the polar ice caps, flooding more frequently and droughts more severe. A recent study reveals that global warming will also increase the crime rate.

The study was prepared by Matthew Ranson, Economist, who crossed data on the history of crime and temperatures, checking that the warmer weather tends to boost more murders, rapes, robberies and other crimes. "Looking at the past, we see a strong relationship between the temperature and the crimes", indicates the author, quoted by Atlantic Cities. "Everything indicates that it will continue in the future," he adds.

But what the increase in crime rate that should be expected? Using the projections of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Ranson has calculated that between 2010 and 2099, climate change will cause "22 thousand murders, 180 thousand violations, 1.2 million serious assaults, robberies, 2.3 1.3 million scams, 2.2 million cases of theft by stretching and 580 thousand stealing cars" additional to the normal crime rate. The data are only for the United States, but the principle could be applied to other countries, with different values.

And the reason for higher temperatures stimulate the increase of crimes? According to Ranson, justification varies from crime to crime. The crimes that involve properties, such as theft or fraud, tend to increase with increasing temperature, but decrease when temperatures are mild, more on the order of 10 degrees Celsius. This suggests that cold weather can create obstacles for committing this kind of crimes â€" Windows closed due to the cold, for example.

Also the relationship between violent crime and temperatures is linear â€" as the thermometer rises, also increases the number of crimes. According to the study's author, this pattern supports the idea that "warmer temperatures increase the frequency of social interactions, of which a small percentage result in violence".

There is also another factor that Ranson considers relevant: previous studies indicate that, with the rising temperatures, people tend to become more aggressive.

Drought in California: before and after

In January, when half the world was trying to survive floods and rainstorms, California decreed a State of emergency for the reasons against. The drought has led the State's water reserves to historic lows â€" less than 35%, when last October were the 75%.

Last week, the rain returned â€" torrential, actually â€" but was insufficient to restore water levels to normal.

The photos published in this article were provided by the California Department of Water Resources, and show how the water will probably be the most scarce of that State in the near future.

While Europe and part of America tries to control the floods and rain, the State of the American West struggle against drought. This is the world in which (increasingly) live.

As the cold of Covilhã will help PT to be more sustainable (with video)

Strategically located in the city of Covilhã, the coldest of Portugal, the new data center-data center or â€" Portugal Telecom impresses with its design. But it's in your technological investment and avant-gardism in sustainability that it becomes more interesting for the Portuguese technological.

"This is a new generation data center, complying with industry best practices on a global scale," explained to the green economy responsible for the infrastructure, Michael Graves.

Situated just outside of Covilhã, with serra in sight, this is the largest data center of Europe and will enable the UK reduce their energy bill in 40%, a savings that could be reflected in a most competitive price in the offer of services.

"Unlike our homes, we need to stay warm in winter and cool in the summer, a data center the need is always cooling," said Michael Graves. "In Covilhã 's cold, and the goal is to take what mother nature offers us here, cold air. Instead of using the air conditioners for cooling, use this cold air for cooling and air-conditioning in the computers. "

The technological megacubo stands in the middle of a reflecting pool, which was thought to store all the rainwater. There are still several deposits of cold air, which aim to cool the environment.

Data centers have to operate with temperatures between the 18th and the 27th, which is why the Covilhã turns out to be an excellent choice for this infrastructure. Opened in September last, the data center has more than 1,600 photovoltaic panels, with 75% of the supply of energy is from renewable sources.
