Bahamas: road construction altered genitals of mosquitofish

The construction of roads in the Bahamas took to changing the appearance and behavior of small native fish species, having created, including a new species of mosquito fish.

According to a survey by North Carolina State University, the mosquitofish was always abundant in small branches that only have water for the tide. Until recently, these fish acted exactly the same way there are several centuries ago. But from the moment I began to be built roads and crossings for vehicles in these aquatic areas, some of the population of mosquito fish lost access to ocean and continued to evolve in isolation.

Over the decades, the fish-mating mosquitoes began to change, as well as their genitals, found researchers. With fewer and fewer predators around, the fish began to have more energy for other activities â€" including reproduce.

"When there are several predators around, the reproductive behaviors are very charged, so the selection prefers male genitals that increase the speed and efficiency of fertilization, with without the consent of the woman," explained to The Dodo the principal investigator, Brian Langerhans.

"[So], there is a greater female preference in mating and more seductive behaviors. There's a very big pressure to have genitals that promote efficiency. We believe that the female is having male genitals slightly different preferences, "continued Langerhans.

For those who are not used to seeing fish genitalia, sexual organs don't appear big differences. But they are so significant that they should lead to the formation of a new species â€" all due to the construction of roads.

"Populations are increasingly differ in their morphology genitalia. Its ability to reproduce for decrease, which will lead to speciation, evolutionary process by which the living species are formed.

It was known that human activity was responsible for the loss of biodiversity across the globe, but the discoveries of Langherans and his team suggests that, in some cases, she can have implications that science is still far from finding out.

As the astronauts from the International Space Station have become stars

It all started a year ago, when the Canadian Chris Hadfield started putting on their Twitter accounts and Facebook hundreds of photos taken at his space mission. This action isolated became trend when astronauts Reid Wiseman (USA), Maxim Suraev (Russia) and especially Alexander Gerst (Germany) started their own space adventure â€" which ended this week in Kazakhstan, after 166 days in orbit.

Throughout this time, the astronauts were in constant contact with a global audience of more than half a million followers, between Twitter and Facebook.

"His mission underscores how social networks have become a component of space programs â€" especially for the international space station (ISS), which has long been debate about the need to find American financing," explains the Quartz.

This renewed interest in the ERA could mean an eye-opener for their primary financial backers, and all this is only possible due to the beauty of the Earth, our planet, and the technology.

American city will create tax on soft drinks

Berkeley, in the u.s. State of California became the first town in the United States and probably the world to impose a tax on sugary soft drinks. The introduction of the measure was the vote and, according to the local press, 75% of the voters were in favor of the tax.

To dissuade the residents of Berkeley to vote in favour, the soft drink industry has launched a massive campaign, which in addition to have cost €1,36 million had not any effect among consumers, referred to TreeHugger.

Excessive consumption and regular soft drinks is associated with a large number of health problems, including diabetes, obesity and lower life expectancy, according to several scientific studies. Public health authorities indicate that taxing these drinks may discourage frequent consumption.

Was ever attempted to introduce a similar proposal in San Francisco, but to no avail. Also Michael Bloomberg, former mayor of New York, tried to limit the super size soft drinks, a proposal that eventually fail.

Western black rhinoceros is officially extinct

This Rhino has always been the rarest subspecies of the black rhinoceros and the poaching and the lack of conservation measures pushed it to the brink of extinction. Before disappearing, the animal could be found in the savannas of Central West Africa.

As this subspecies of rhinoceros that disappeared forever, also the white rhinoceros-of-North is on the verge of extinction â€" there are only six copies worldwide and all captive-as the Javan rhinoceros. The indication from the revision of the list of endangered species of the IUCN.

Rhinoceros-Southern white, such as the North, relative was almost on the brink of extinction in the early 19th century, but thanks to conservation measures the animal managed to survive. Currently, there are about 20,000 Rhinoceros-Southern white in freedom. If similar conservation measures had been applied to the Western black rhino and rhino-northern white maybe species have thrived. "These measures need to be strengthened now, especially the management of habitats to improve performance and prevent other rhinos if expire", asserts Simon Stuart, Chairman of the IUCN, cites the Inhabitat.

The revision of the list of threatened species revealed that a quarter of the world's mammals are at risk of extinction, as well as numerous species of plants. But the future for the oceanic fauna is also not encouraging. The IUCN indicates that five of the eight subspecies of tuna â€" a predator that is essential to the health of the marine ecosystem â€" are threatened or near threatened. The list also shows that 26 newly-discovered species of amphibians are disappearing at an alarming rate.

A shelf which turns into coffin

In some cultures it is tradition that the dead be buried with some of their belongings. Inspired by that usual, William Warren created the Shelves for Life, which run during the shelf life and coffin in death.

To build a coffin are required large amounts of wood and a lot of raw material turns out to be wasted on the trim and ornamentation of the casket, referred to Inhabitat. Many people buy their coffin before he died, to save you the trouble to the family at the time of his death. But, ironically, is a subject that the person can never enjoy.

The system of Shelves for Life, however, allows a person to make use of a piece of furniture for a living, while ensuring a final resting place. To have a dual use, this shelf-coffin becomes environmentally friendly since the same raw material is used twice, preventing the slaughter of more trees.

Danish artist transforms old vacuum cleaners in retro lamps

When appliances stop working and have no concert possible your order most likely is in the trash or in the electron. But a pint to creativity can make these obsolete objects into something useful and decorative. That's what made Kristian Linneberg, a Danish artist who created lamps from recycled parts of vacuum cleaners, especially retro Nilfisk brand.

"It all started when I wanted to create a modern lamp from an old vacuum cleaner. The idea of turning something old into new and view the final product it inspired me to create more. My vision and creativity have increased. Currently, I'm working on six models of lamps, all from parts of Nilfisk vacuums ", explains the artist, cites the Tree Hugger.

The original Nilfisk vacuums are sold in Denmark as well as in other countries, before the first world war and its marketing lasted until the end of the years 1970.

The lamps created by Linneberg become the living testimony of a durable design, adapted to various contexts, extrapolating original obsolescence of vacuum cleaners.

Combine the health welfare is the concept of the Termas do Carapacho, in Graciosa island in the Azores. The use of these thermal baths dates back to at least 1750, when they were used in the prophylaxis of rheumatic diseases, liver and skin of colitis, being the most common form of treatment soaking baths. The thermal waters originate in an aquifer underlying the Furna do Enxofre and emerge to a temperature of around 40 degrees Celsius.

In 2010, the spas have been remodeled, an investment of almost € 3 million regional government and this site which for a long time was associated with medical problems also became a space of relaxation.

"A part of the offer is very linked to the use of thermal water and then we also have the issue of SPA", explains Carlos Basu, from the Windows of nature â€" the company that operates the baths-the green economy.

In these spas, water is the main raw material and there are several possibilities to enjoy this natural resource. For those who want to take advantage of the thermal properties of water, but can't handle the higher temperatures the pool, vichy bath or hydromassage is an option. Then there are also massages, jacuzzi and other treatments that use the thermal properties of the waters.

Currently, work at a spa four employees receiving training and environmental sustainability. "The employees themselves have a formation at the level of the nature and the biosphere to be defenders of these agents," explains Carlos Basu. For this reason and also for other environmental criteria, the company that runs the Termas do Carapacho received the Green Key â€" an award that distinguishes tourist complexes that promote sustainable tourism and environmental education.

The green economy was acquainted the Termas do Carapacho. See the episode 331 here.

The tallest residential building in the northern hemisphere

Cities are increasingly crowded and the architecture evolves with this drastic demographic transformation. In 432 Park Avenue, Manhattan, New York, is the tallest residential building in the northern hemisphere, which will start to receive the first owners next year.

With 425 feet tall, the building is 96 floors and was designed by Rafael Viñoli. The building has "only" 104 apartments, which each cost between €13,5 million ($ 42.2 million) and € 75 million (£ 237 million).

The building has all the concessions possible and imaginary: wine cellars for storing wine temperature control, terraces, spa, swimming pools and a therapy room and massages.

"We have set up a monument in New York, which can be seen from all five boroughs and is an addition to the iconic landscape of the city," explained Harry Macklowe, the Macklowe Properties.

In the future, this will be one of the major trends of the cities, the construction in time. But, unlike this precious architectural jewel, the buildings will be crowded with families, colacando new social and environmental challenges the communities that, in itself, need some advice in these areas. In New York and other large global metropolises.

Portuguese Architects develop new concept of sustainable penthouse

The Portuguese Architects Michele Maika and Tiago Barros developed a new concept of sustainable penthouse, a project that visualizes a new solution to live on top of the buildings, in an urban environment. "There's top floors which are forgotten in the cities, and can be rethought and readpatados," explained Green Savers Tiago Barros.

The architects propose an apartment with slanted Windows and which form a perfect angle, offering 360-degree views over the city. The Windows are connected by a green roof slightly curved.

The terrace has multiple functions: it can absorb rainwater, providing insulation to the apartment, reduce urban air temperature and create a habitat for birds in the city. It consists of precast concrete slabs, waterproof membrane, a drainage layer and a auto-irrigação system and live plants.

Inside the penthouse for three different spaces, one for relaxation, a dining area and a bedroom. All have the same size and the partition walls have all necessary equipment to life on a day-to-day basis, since machines for the kitchen, storage and cables. Access to the apartment is through the pre-existing building.

"These urban typologies can be instsaladas on various terraces across town. The sustainable penthouses can be essential to animal life in the city and help improve the environment and conditions for the well-being of its citizens ", Tiago Barros concluded.

Tiago Barros is already a well-known architect in Green Savers. Record your 2011 interview and other of his projects. The Lofty Corner, the Digital Revolution, the Passing Cloud and Sky Network.

Friendships more unsuspected of nature

We have long known that there are animals that coexist daily, as the Heron-Buckaroo and the cattle, but we don't always have examples of these mixtures, a perspective that is wrong. In fact, it can be a jungle out there, but many of the animals that compose it live peacefully. This series of photographs that we published in the photo gallery below are proof of that friendship doesn't choose species: cats and mice, dogs and cats, crocodiles and butterflies, all coexist peacefully.

The photos have several sources but were compiled by the Daily Mail to prove that wildlife is not a world of dog, literally, and that the scenarios more Dantesque turn out to be created by being smarter on the planet, the man â€" but that we knew a long time ago.

Got any pictures of two animals in perfect communion? Send it to info@greensavers.pt. We would like to add your photo to our art news.

A belt that turns into a scooter

If he thinks he has seen it all when it comes to sustainable mobility, then watch this belt-or scooter-which transforms into a scooter â€" or belt. The invention is the designer Adam Torok, who believes that the future of mobility will be dominated by humans, so I thought of something that could be part of our clothing.

"The more efficient vehicles and crossing two points in a minimum space of time are our legs. But there is something more important, storage, "said Torok the City Lab.

"Various methods that have been developed in recent years will become obsolete if a vehicle is designed to be completely portable, usable and part of our apparel," continued the designer. Vehicles like this.

Torok designed the vehicle for his thesis at the University of West Hungary â€" Institute of Applied Arts. The belt weighs 1.8 pounds â€" Yes, it's heavy, but it's as if we went back to the era of the Wild West, with large belts â€" and the scooter is not the most stylish. But it works and will be on sale soon, ensures the designer.

The urban jungle of New York City housed unknown frog species since 1937

For almost 80 years, the biologist Carl Kauffeld claimed to have heard a new species of frog croaking on the outskirts of New York. His discovery turned out to fall on deaf ears and the animal has never been sought since 1937. At least until recently.

With the help of genetic testing and bioacústicos, Rutgers University researchers have confirmed the existence of the frog heard by Kauffeld and registered it as a new species.

The search for the frog started in 2009, when the biologist Jeremy Feinberg, Masters student at Rutgers, he heard a strange croaking on Staten Island. As he was scattering the possibility of the existence of a new species of Leopard Frog, were getting reports of the existence of the frog in other places, from North Carolina to Connecticut.

The animal was spotted and proven already as a new species â€" Rana kauffeldi, in honor of Carl Kauffeld, and common name Leopard Frog-Atlantic coast. "The discovery of a new species of frog in the Northwest is a remarkable event," says Feinberg, cites the Dodo.

"After some discussion we agreed that it was fair to baptize the species in honour of Carl Kauffeld. We wanted to recognize their work and perpetuate its discovery ignored for almost 80 years, "adds the biologist.

Only in 2012, with the Stoppers initiative that give leaves, promoted by the Mainland, were delivered more than 45 thousand bags of Stoppers by 854 participants choices. "With the sampling point in every store in the country, the Continent's largest partner in collecting of corks, with more than 90% of total collected annually," explains Quercus.

The project aims at collecting the corks, send them for recycling and thus promoting Cork and finance reforestation, through the Common forest project. On Saturday, was launched a new campaign to collect corks for schools and IPSS.

The campaign runs until June 5 and will reward the four entities that stand out in terms of collection of corkscrews. The premium may vary at the level of the site, but will be always on a visit to a space that respects the natural values and sustainability and constitutes an approach to experience nature and construction of environmentally responsible citizens.

"The economic valuation of Cork in its various applications allows the preservation of one of the Mediterranean's biodiversity hotspots and a rural and traditional Portuguese culture linked to the Cork oak forest. The main application of this noble material is the Cork and the possibility of recycling increases the environmental benefits associated with its use, "explains Quercus.

"The Continent, recognizing the importance of preservation of cork oak forest, he engaged with the Quercus in actions of dissemination, awareness-raising and promotion of recycling of Cork Stoppers," continues the ONGA.

With this initiative, the fate of corks ceases to be waste and shall be a Rolhinhas or the Information Desk of the Mainland stores. From here, and using only the existing logistics without increasing CO2 emissions, the Stoppers are forwarded for recycling.

The property, with 115.00 square meters, was bought by the company Switzerland, too short, which will now produce batteries are lithium-ion phosphate can be loaded in 30 minutes and last up to 40,000 loads.

In the former factory were produced every year, about 1000 million cigarettes, but the building was already closed for several years, because of the decrease in smoking in the United States. Now, she will employ 500 people in new activity, with 2,500 new jobs provided for others for the next three years.

The property cost €55 million ($ 170 million). "This is going to change [the rules] of the game," explained the President of the company, Jostein Eikeland. The batteries will store 2 megawatts (MW) and reducing inefficiencies that exist today in the power grid.

According to a recent report by Navigant Consulting Research, worldwide revenue of advanced batteries of large capacity will grow from €130 million (US $ 410 million) to more than € 2 billion ($ 6.1 billion) in 2023.

Some experts estimate that the current power grid loses up to 30 percent of its energy, for inefficiency and waste. This is what the too short and competitors want to change, so the battery technology, still face, is changing quickly, says Fortune.

Google Earth and the Landsat program, NASA, have created what could be considered the closest thing to a virtual time machine to show the deforestation of the Amazon. In total, are 40 years of destruction and condensed in a few minutes.

To create the video, were organized, compiled and edited hundreds photographs of Amazonia collected by space satellites. Now, for the first time, you can see the result of decades of human activity in this land ecosystem and the consequent environmental destruction rates.

During the past 40 years, the Landsat has captured images of the sceneries, photographing the same area every 16 days, referred to the Inhabitat. The Landsat program was launched by NASA in 1972, in partnership with the US Geological Survey.

In addition to the deforestation of the Amazon, there are also videos about the drought of the Aral Sea and the Las Vegas urban explosion.

Bahamas: sculpture giant Navy warns of collapse of the oceans

It is not known what happened to Jason Taylor food and cooking to develop this megalomaniac project, but apparently it will already be bearing fruit. Named Ocean Atlas, the project is actually a gigantic sculpture that aims to draw attention to the collapse of the oceans and coral.

The sculpture honors High, the Titan of Greek mythology condemned by Zeus to carry the heavens on his shoulders for eternity, and has five feet tall, reaching to the bottom of the sea. She was installed on the West coast of New Providence, Nassau, in the Bahamas.

The sculpture has the face of a young woman and wishes to draw attention to overfishing, pollution and global warming, responsible for the collapse of the oceans.

Commissioned by the Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation, the sculpture was mounted in parts, beneath the water. The material used has a neutral pH, which functions as an artificial reef, thus allowing the colonization of new corals and removing the stress caused by tourism in other natural habitats.

At the top of the sculpture there is a sunlight and a signal flag, which will serve as a guide for browsers, warns the sustainable planet. Here are some pictures of the project.

Planet Earth seen from space

Last year, Chris Hadfield became the most famous astronaut in the world. The story has already been told here, but we can repeat it. During their daily work on the international space station, the canadiado spoke with his son via email â€" in fact, the son helped in the management of their social networks.

One day, Hadfield gave an idea for father junior: why not ask his followers what kind of images would you like to see? "The answer was: ' I want an image of my hometown, where I was born '," explained Hadfield to Quartz.

In a short time, Hadfield came to worldwide fame â€" his Twitter account already has 1.1 million followers and Facebook about 700 thousand. "It was fantastic. At first, I thought it was a bit narcissistic, "joked Hadfield, who just released the book" You Are Here: Around the World in 92 Minutes ", a compilation of 192 of the most iconic photos that the Commander took from space.

In total, Hadfield took about 45 images of planet Earth, most transmitted directly to NASA and stored. "I never got to see many of them," confesses.

"There's a notion that the borders are man-made but we cannot see it from space. But we can, because of agricultural spaces, municipal standards and even natural parks, "continued Hadfield.

For the Commander, more than a book about nature, this is an illustrated volume about civilization. See some of the photos included in the book, which can be purchased here.

London: semi-covered alley retails for € 330,000

We know that life in the cities is impossible when a half-covered alley in London was sold at auction for £ 330,000 ($ 1 million). It is true that London is not exactly the cheapest city in the world, but this alley in Northcote Road, Battersea, being sandwiched between two shops, is far from the perfect home â€" or even to be a House.

The site has building permission â€" hence the asking price had to be raised â€" but it's far, far away to be worth that much money. The new owner can now transform the space into a welcoming residence, but will have to spend as much, probably, to do so.

The construction authorization includes an extension of the House for a first floor, behind the alley â€" in total, the home may have up to 275 square feet. "[I was] a little surprised by the price at which the alley was sold. But only a little, "explained Chris Coleman Smith, director of Savills Auctions, in charge of the auction, the Evening Standard.

For the same price, according to Smith, the owner could buy a House with five bedrooms in Yorkshire or a spacious apartment of four rooms in Suffolk. But not in London.

Distant planets can help us understand what will happen to our oceans

If we want to look to the future of the oceans, we must also understand what's going on on the other planets. Briefly, this is the theory espoused by Jaz Zalasiewicz and Mark Williams, from the Department of geology at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, who have just published the book "Ocean Worlds: The Story of seas on Earth and Other Planets".

According to the authors, the existing water bodies under miles and miles of ice exist on other planets can give us clues about what will happen to our seas.

The book explores the history of the Earth's oceans and what the new discoveries are telling us about his future. In addition to the futurism based on Planets, the book addresses the human impact in our ocean, overfishing and pollution, which endanger this precious resource.

According to the authors, the world has changed so much that we are now in a new era, in which the consensus is real: the Anthropocene will seem very different to geologists of the future than it was before him.

"We know of possible oceans on Venus, and probably those on Mars, as well as the seas that are beneath the ice on the moons of Saturn and Jupiter, and the seas of the moon Titan. They tell us what may be the State of various Oceans of the Earth and how they may change over time, or disappear, "Williams explained to the Daily Telegraph.

United Kingdom: Hurricane Gonzalo helped to overcome wind nuclear power production

The presence of Hurricane Gonzalo on British coast helped wind turbines to produce more energy than nuclear plants in the country in the last week, according to data from Lorien Energy Index (LAW), compiled by Lorien Engineering Solutions.

This has been, moreover, a glorious year for the British wind power, too because of the extreme weather phenomena. As a consequence, energy prices have fallen almost 7 percent between the first two quarters of the year, and is now 4% cheaper than in the same period.

"The extreme weather phenomena and all the issues around nuclear power stations EDF contributed to these accomplishments. And the way the media publish these results is a positive indication of the recognition of the renewables sector and their contribution to the energy supply Briton ", explained to Tom Edie Jardan, Lorien's sustainability consultant.

In summer, the wind had already surpassed, in five different days, coal plants. "There is a real business opportunity to invest in renewable energy-efficient initiatives, betting on increasingly low costs of renewable and low-carbon technologies," concluded the consultant.

It is ironic that the climatérios extreme phenomena, many of them a result of global warming and increase in emissions with gaseous pollutants, they influence the growth of renewable. But it's still a pleasant news, too.

Ancient inhabitants of Easter Island traveled 7,500 miles in wooden canoes

The ancient rapanui, the inhabitants of Easter Island, came to that spot after traveled about 7,500 miles, traveling several times the way to South America. Before, they would have already migrated in Polynesia, in wooden canoes.

According to the Smithsonian, nobody knows for sure what prompted the Rapa Nui traveling halfway around the world to reach Easter Island, in the great Pacific Ocean. Other of the mysteries is set against the backdrop of gigantic stones hundreds â€" the moai-who have traveled themselves thousands of miles from the site where they were taken. The third secret refers to the way your company itself went into decline and collapsed.

"Maybe they used ropes to pull the stones or maybe the mice have gnawed all the Palm trees," explains the site. "But we still don't know why they left the Polynesia".

Second Will Dunham, who explained the findings of the study in a Reuters article, the DNA of rapanui 27 shows that the Polynesians and rapanui met and fraternized with South Americans, between 1300 and 1500.

The research team analyzed the way DNA fragments of Europeans and native Americans has been found in the genomes of the Rapa Nui of Easter Island. The DNA of native Americans is more fragmented than the Europeans, suggesting that this "mix" happened before.

The researchers concluded that the "mixture" occurred to 19 to 23 generations â€" on the other hand, the rapanui only began to "blend" with the Europeans in the 19th century. Today the Rapa Nui are 75% Polynesians, 15% in Europe and 10% native Americans.

Namely, according to the researchers, the Rapa Nui have spent much of their existence to sail between Easter Island and the South America, probably to change sweet potatoes for other goods.

The results â€" absolutely stunning â€" were presented in the journal Current Biology.

British television shows have seal of sustainability

What ingredients make a TV program a success? The quality of the protagonists, purpose, suspense and intelligence are four of them, but a television show is more than a piece of 50 minutes to entertain us until the end, he got behind a production â€" often-complex and dozens, hundreds or thousands of people working for a single objective: the Viewer.

However, a TV show does not end at the Viewer, with the closing credits. It can be made in the country where it is originally broadcast or another, by a production team of two or 200 people.

As the concepts of sustainability extends to various industries, the TV could not stay behind. Is that what you thought the British BBC, in 2010, when he created the albert, a stamp of environmental impact of television production and which calculates the carbon footprint of each program.

The BBC approach pioneered internationally and, to some extent, has not yet been copied. Despite a study by the University of West Indies advance technology sector â€" in which the TV industry moves â€" is responsible for 2% of global emissions of polluting gases.

A television production that wants to apply for the seal albert has several challenges: teams have to avoid sending garbage to the dumpster and promote energy efficiency of filming. There are productions that already use renewable energies, scripts prints, scenes constructed with sustainable materials or catering local produce â€" and all this counts for final certification.

Now, says the Guardian, albert seal between a new phase. Your logo will be placed in the credits of 15 programs companies: the UK's four largest TV stations and producers as the Shed, Endelmol, all3media, IMG, NBC Universal, UKTC, Kudos or Twofour.

The first programme to feature the new logo will air on Monday, November 3, on Sky: is Trollied comedy, which already use the carbon calculator albert to help monitor emissions of CO2.

"The Sky and the Roughcut TV, which produces the program, want it to be as sustainable as possible. The use of lights and papers was avoided and props like refrigerators, countertops and shelves were all wanted men in nearby shops, "says the Guardian.

According to British newspaper, several internal BBC productions have also use the albert system, as well as the ITV. For when a solution equal to the Portuguese television scenario?

Brazilian investigators have discovered a new species of Tarantula Granbury on Amazon and decided to baptize her Bumba Lennoni, in tribute to the singer and ex-Beattle John Lennon.

Idol of biologists Alexandre Bragio Bonaldo and Laura Tavares Miglio, the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi and Fernando Pérez-Miles, of the University of the Republic, Montevideo, Uruguay, Lennon shares the name of the new Tarantula with the tradition of the boi-bumbá, of Brazilian folklore â€" and hence the designation of bumba.

"The specific name was given in honor of John Winston Lennon, the legendary creator of the Beatles, which contributed to making the world a nicer place," wrote the authors in the study, published last week in the journal ZooKeys.

According to the sustainable planet, the new species was captured in Caxiuaná, in para. It differentiates itself from other already discovered by a set of specific features, such as the format of the palps, structures used in playback. "These animals copulate with the palp, located near the mouth, and have specific structures in them that fit into the female's genitalia. Each species has a kind of modification, so this characteristic helps determine the species, "said Alexandre Bonaldo Veja website.

U.S. wants list African lion as a species in danger of extinction

The u.s. Government, through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agency Servive, proposed yesterday that the African lion is considered an animal in danger of extinction after a study show that the animal might disappear in the not too distant future. If the suggestion is adopted, the species will be protected.

According to the organisation, quoted by the Huffington Post, the African lions can be found in a vast area of Africa, but about 70%, i.e., 24,000 live in just 10 large clusters. "[List the African lion as endangered species] will bring all the protections of American law to Lion conservation, allow us to improve the monitoring of imports and international exchanges", explained the Agency's director, Dan Ashe.

The main threats to African lion are loss of habitat of the animals that they hunt and conflicts with humans. With the passing of the years and decades, increasingly people and farmers entered the sacred territory of the Lions, coming into conflict with these. On the other hand, as poachers take their food, the Lions eventually Hunt the cattle, leading to retaliatory measures on the part of farmers.

The proposal now has 90 days to be commented on by the public and organizations, and approved or rejected.

Australia Unveils massive plan to halt the loss of native species until 2020

The Ministry of environment of Australia will launch a plan for halting the loss of native species in the territory, particularly mammals, until 2020. The Australia is the country with the highest rate of mammal extinctions worldwide, with about 29 missing native species over the past 200 years.

"Determined the objective of halting the loss of species of mammals until 2020," said the Environment Minister, Greg Hunt, in presenting the plan, cites the Guardian.

To fulfill the goal, the Government will start a war against the population of feral cats and strays that, according to the verdict of the scientific community, are the biggest threat to species of Australian mammals and birds. There are about 20 million feral cats and strays in Australia, responsible for the deaths of about 75 million birds and small mammals every day.

The Environment Minister also promised deeper governmental interventions to protect the species in Kakadu, Norfolk Island, Raine Island and great barrier reef. Already on Christmas Island, the Government wants to eradicate all feral cats.

You know who's going to manage the conservation of crocodiles? Gucci.

There's something ironic or sarcastic on news that Kering, company that owns brands such as Gucci, Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent or Alexander McQueen, will join the International Trade Center to finance the sustainable management of the Nile crocodiles, in Madagascar.

According to the International Trade Center-a partnership between the World Trade Organization and the United Nations â€" have long since populations of Nile crocodiles in Madagascar are decreasing or are not properly monitored. Still, it create some perplexity that the chosen company to "help" to monitor the management of crocodiles is the Kering, which has a clear interest in the skin of animals: she ends up in their bags, belts, wallets and luxury shoes.

The Nile crocodile is the largest of the African crocodiles, which can grow up to 680 pounds and up to six metres in size.

According to the Quartz, there is an "opportunity for ITC and Kering" search and maintain "a more sustainable trade and best managed of skins of Nile crocodiles in Madagascar".

In part, explains the aggregator, is a way of balancing the conservation of the animal with the economic opportunity that reptiles offer places. "For many of the poorest people of Madagascar, collecting and selling crocodile eggs is an important income," explains the Quartz.

In February 2013, the LMVH, competitor of Kering, bought a fifth of Australian crocodiles by € 2 million ($ 6 million). Now, the Kering will fund the sustainable management of crocodiles. Bearing in mind that the skin of exotic animals represents 10% of the total sales of luxury brands, maybe how the conservation of these animals is being managed is not the most appropriate, don't you think?

7 major infrastructures for bicycles

There is much that bikes are demanding their share of space in large cities, but all the great works the forego. The Guardian does not believe in this statement, so I sought out some of the most amazing infrastructure built from scratch for the bikes, and the truth is that until found. Few, but found.

The seven designs that you present at the Gallery is the result of the vision of the mayors of cities such as Eindhoven or Calgary, where the bike is not more nor less than other modes of transport. Just like that, otherwise, she may stand out as the most clean and sustainable means of transport of large cities (and not only).
