6 mistakes we made when we go shopping

How many times are you going to shopping a week? And belly full or empty? Are issues such as these that concern Katie Hill, coach of American well-being, alerting you to some mistakes we all make when it comes to read from the grocery store.

"As a coach, I noticed that my clients feel anxious when they have a house full of food. And many basic mistakes when we buy our food, "he explained to the Huffington Post.

The educator has compiled a list of the six mistakes that we all make when we go shopping. And some of them are quite pertinent.

Katie leaves a also a word of advice: sometimes delegate the purchases to someone: "Many times, it's my husband who goes shopping. He is the most patient customer in the world ".

Mistake no. 1: go shopping only once per week

This is a very common mistake in the United States. Many families fill their shopping carts once a week, hoping that these are sufficient for the rest of the week. With this strategy, we tend to buy foods that last longer, i.e. abuse of processed foods.

On the other hand, this also means that, sometimes, we leave expiry of foods, which leaves us upset. If we buy less food but we increase the trips to the supermarket, save money and have more fresh food every day.

Mistake no. 2: go shopping without a plan

There are more and more people with shopping lists, but often the foods that are part of this are not coordinated. Before we left home, we must know what we need for two or three days. I.e. we should buy enough for nine meals.

Katie explains that sometimes comes home-coming of the supermarket â€" and has nothing to eat, just food scattered: some carrots, some canned.

Mistake no. 3: go shopping on a full stomach

It was known that shopping on an empty stomach is disastrous, now we can add a full stomach. According to Katie, many of his clients who go to the supermarket with a full stomach will buy everything but food: toilet paper, detergents, toiletries, but no food. That is, you must return to the supermarket a few hours later.

Mistake # 4: buying too much convenience food "healthy"

There are hundreds of food whose manufacturers consider "gluten-free", "organic", "fat-free" or "natural" and that, in fact, are not. We must opt for real food, preferably that don't come in a package that survives everything â€" including nuclear holocausts.

Mistake # 5: not knowing what days your supermarket renews the stock

This is one of the great advice I ever published in Green Savers. The secret to buying fresh food is knowing what day your supermarket renews the stock. Ask the Manager and he will tell you, certainly. Then, plan purchases that day â€" which does not necessarily have to be at the weekend, although give more way to most consumers.

Mistake # 6: not having patience

It sucks to wait hours for their time on fresh fish or deli? Yes, it's true, but know that the food is fresh. Try to resist buying packaged products â€" sometimes they are several days ago at the same venue.

Black dogs are the last to be adopted in animal shelters

The black dogs are not as often adopted as dogs with other hair colors and usually are the last to be chosen among the animals that are in shelters for adoption. Although there are no official data, the institutions that receive the animals noticed that the black-haired are the last to be adopted.

The main reason for the phenomenon occur relates to some prejudices in relation to dogs with black fur. Often people associate these bad animals dogs and potentially violent. The black dogs are also often portrayed on television and in movies as aggressive animals, which contributes to the stigma.

Prejudices regarding these animals already have name-Black Dog syndrome. The fact that the animals of other colors are deprecated in relation to black dogs causes these animals have much higher eutanização rates in relation to other.

According to popular folklore, the black dogs are associated with death and the superstitions, such as the black cats. Many people consider even if you have a black dog brings bad luck.

However, the owners of these animals contend that are sweet and adorable, but also recognize that they are not well-seen.

The snakes are the world's most fascinating animals, of which cause more fears and phobias and, definitely, the Queens wildlife programmes. Despite its characteristics are already well known, never cease to amaze us with some of the tricks they use when it comes time to hunt.

The last proof of infidelity comes to us of Moremi, in Botstwana, where the photographer Fred von Winckelmann caught a Python eating an antelope whole and without major problems.

"View an African Python swallowing a young Antelope is something that only happens once in a lifetime", explained the Dutch photographer. "The snake was eating calmly your meal, didn't even notice us. This allowed me to download and shoot it at the level of your eyes ".

When von Wincklemann arrived at the scene, the snake was starting to move the jaw to eat the antelope, something he continued to do for about 45 minutes. "So, we let her digest the meal. They are very vulnerable when they do, "he explained.

Australia: heatwave is a consequence of climate change caused by man

Southern Australia is experiencing a wave of extreme heat, with the thermometers to exceed 40° c. Despite being summer, abnormal temperatures are causing several fires, the electrical supply failures and even lead to withdrawals of tennis in Australia Open, taking place in Melbourne.

Scientists indicate that the wave of extreme heat is a clear example of how climate change caused by human species are having consequences on natural climate variability.

According to Sarah Perkins, New South Wales University, a specialist in Australian climate, the latest heatwaves have occurred in the absence of El Ninõ, climatic phenomenon of atmospheric and ocean nature, which causes abnormal warming of surface water and shallow Equatorial Pacific Ocean. "Usually we hope the higher temperatures occur more frequently during the phase of El Ninõ, however, we're checking consecutive heat waves that are not caused by climate variability", says the expert, quoted by the Financial Times.

This week, temperatures exceeded 40° C several times and this is the second wave of extreme heat in 15 days. Recently, the Institute of meteorology Australian confirmed that 2013 was the hottest year since annual temperature monitors in the country. Average temperatures were 1.2° C above average long-term, surpassing the record of 2005, when the thermometers were 0.5° C above average.

The Portuguese revolutionary innovation that joins the wind and solar energy (with video)

For years, Portugal was seen as an example for renewable energy. This investment has spread not only by companies but also universities and even citizens, being today well rooted in society.

To ride this boom came the Omniflow Omni-directional turbine, a motionless, low visual impact, which captures the wind and the Sun in all directions, allowing you to produce energy through wind or sunlight-or both, simultaneously.

This innovative infrastructure was developed by Pedro Rouen, materials engineer who launched the namesake company just over three months. "We were well received by the market. People were able to understand the message and what is the product, "explained Peter Rouen, who is now CEO of Omniflow.

The entrepreneur explains that has several customers that already have grid connection and who are thinking of expanding into wind production. "Many of these clients have electric cars," continues Peter Rouen.

The company also already has several foreign customers reside in Portugal, which demonstrates that the infrastructure has the potential of globalization.

One of the great advantages of Omniflow is its characteristic facing installation in urban areas. The company is working with the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto in product testing. "We have an infrastructure that allows us to measure, with excellent quality, the performance of the equipment. Above all, it enables us to measure the performance of the equipment in an environment very close to the ideal, because the lab simulates a low voltage electricity network, "said Louis dryness, Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto.

The system does not depend on the direction of the wind, this being the great asset of the equipment and the characteristic that is attracting foreign investors. In 2013, Pedro Rouen pretended to have a turnover of around € 25 million ($ 80,000), but the value was folded. In 2014, the aim is to reach € 1 million ($ 3.2 million).

France, Brazil and Angola are the three markets where Omniflow has sold equipments â€" there are three different sizes, between € 1,400 ($ 4,500) and €14 thousand ($ 45,000). See the episode 85 of green economy.

Norway: cold wave last weekend froze School of fish

The waves of cold have multiplied all over the northern hemisphere in recent weeks. The last country to be reached was that Norway, last weekend, faced lower temperatures than normal.

Temperatures dropped enough to freeze a shoal of herrings on Lovund coast. According to Aryl Slotte, specialist in pelagic fish of the Marina Norway Research Institute, the animals will have been forwarded to shallow waters by cormorants, a predator of these animals. Prevented from swimming to deep water, with less likelihood of freeze, the fish ended up trapped and froze near the coast.

Seawater freezes at temperatures of -1.9° C, a temperature slightly lower than fresh water. According to the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, the public broadcaster, in temperatures -7.8° C reached Lovund last weekend and were accompanied by strong winds, the Huffington Post.

In January 2012, about 20 tonnes of herring washed up on a beach in Northern Norway. Scientists found no apparent cause for the death of the fish, but the possibilities include oxygen deprivation, illness or storms, causes that can easily cause the death of fish on the high seas, which are later dragged ashore by currents.

Remember that recently, also in Norway, a frog woke up too early due to the mild climate, having died when the ice came back.

Portuguese project creates a map of the biodiversity of the Serra da Estrela (with video)

Green Savers was the first information sites to make known the GeObserver, a portal that gathers data from weather, fauna, flora, demographics, hydrography, elevation and Serra da Estrela buildings of the last 30 years.

After 18 months, the green economy was visiting Paulo Barbosa and realize, in fact, how does the project. "The platform collects data from public and private weather stations, in real time. We also have people on the ground to collect data, which are checked by technical experts in each area. Ordinary people can also go to the site and record anything you can see or photograph of biodiversity ", explains Paulo Barbosa.

With the help of the photographs sent in by citizens, the GeObserver makes the confirmation of information and, from that moment on, starts building the biodiversity map of Serra da Estrela.

The main objective of GeObserver is to use these data for environmental protection, by which the platform received the help of a very special partner, the Association Friends of the Serra da Estrela.

"Very few people know who owns the Park in terms of biodiversity, whether of fauna and flora. There is a generic survey, but [the management] of everyday life has not been made. And you can only save what is known, "said the green economy Jose Maria Saraiva, Mountain Association.

In the short and medium term, the GeObserver will have to get new support to the network of information is not lost. One of the main achievements of this cross-was the creation of an index of risk of fire, which helps Civil protection and other local authorities to prevent to the heights of the hottest year. Thus, the public interest is visible.

The success of the platform will be able to take it in the short term, for other stops. According to Paulo Barbosa, have already made some contacts with Portuguese-speaking countries, who are interested in GeObsever to manage, more efficiently, its gigantic natural parks.

Like Green Savers had already in advance, one of these parks is the Gorongosa. See the episode 184 of the green economy.

Older trees grow at a rate greater

Trees increase the pace of growth as they grow older, according to a new study published yesterday in the journal Nature.

"The trees continue to grow so intense during its life cycle," said Nate Stephenson, study leader and forest ecologist of the US Geological Survey, in Three Rivers, California.

The research studied 403 species of trees from around the world and concluded that these never suffer from problems of old age. In animals, the change and ageing of cells will ultimately determine his death. But the trees do not have identical problems, only diseases, insects, the man, fire or accidents â€" like lightning â€" the can kill.

"They never stop growing. Each year that passes, always weigh more than in the previous year ", explained Stephenson.

Until now, it was believed that the trees stop growing older as they were made. A 2010 study was the first to go against this theory, when concluded that the giant California trees continue to grow into the sky each year that passed â€" and at a pace always greater.

Was this example it took Stephenson trying to learn more about the growth of trees â€" and if this was connected to his old age.

The study evaluated more than 670 thousand tropical and temperate climates trees â€" about 90% of these grow increasingly larger rhythms. The oldest trees can grow to 600 pounds per year.

Dried fruits help reduce risk of obesity

Formerly, the nuts were considered too fat to be healthy. Currently, the dried fruits are fashionable and their benefits begin to be widely advertised and studies that come to prove the benefits of the consumption of these foods are multiplying.

A new study, conducted by American investigators concluded that the nuts can help control weight and to reduce the risk of obesity. According to researchers, study participants who ingested quantities of regular dry swipes â€" such as almonds, pistachios, walnuts and Brazil nuts-were between 37% and 46% less risk of becoming obese than those who drank less few amounts of dried fruit.

Frequent consumers of dry fruits are also less likely to have metabolic syndrome, a cluster of risk factors that are linked to heart disease and diabetes. "There is another study which indicates that there is an association between the ingestion of dried fruit and a low risk of obesity, as well as a less prone to suffering from metabolic syndrome", indicates Joan Sabaté, researcher of Loma Linda University in California, CITES Reuters.

Another study shows that people who ingested nuts regularly are less likely to die in the 12:0 am following the intake of these foods than people who do not consume nuts often.

While this conclusion may not fully indicate that the differences observed between those who like dried fruits and those who pass well without them are caused by these foods, researchers indicate that there is reason to believe that the dried fruit provides direct benefits to health.

Most nuts are high in unsaturated fat, which is a "good" fat when compared with the saturated fat found in animal products. The high protein content makes people who ingest feel more satiated, leading to a lower consumption of food less healthy. Furthermore, dried fruit contain other nutrients and plant chemicals that are beneficial to health, indicates Joan Sabaté.

For the study in question was analyzed the diet of 803 participants. In General, those who ingested significant amounts of dried fruit â€" about 16 grams per day â€" were weighing a little more than average. Those who took little or no nuts had a very above average weight and, in some cases, showed signs of obesity.

The body mass index (BMI)-relationship between weight and height â€" a healthy adult should vary between 18.5 and 24.9. People with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 are overweight and a BMI which exceeds the 30 is considered obese.

The volunteers in the study who consumed nuts regularly had an average BMI of 27 while those who ate little or no food of this type had a BMI between 29 and 30.

England: Government launches €7,2 million Fund for planting 4 million trees

Over the next two years should be planted four million trees across England, according to the Government's confirmation of that country to continue to fund the creation of new forests.

The trees will be planted through a Government Fund of €7,2 million ($ 23.2 million), which will create 2,000 hectares of new forests and woodlands. The Fund is part of a total investment of €36,2 million (US $ 117 million) for the creation of new forests and management and preservation of existing ones.

However, plans to plant 2,000 hectares of new forests fall short the objectives of the Government itself, which wanted to plant about five thousand new acres, according to the Woodland Trust.

According to the Minister of forests, Dan Rogerson, quoted by the Guardian, the forests are "a cherished natural resource" and "provide a valuable habitat for wildlife and natural areas for future generations to enjoy".

"Planting 4 million trees over the next year will help us to increase the forest area, which will benefit the wild life, improve the environment and help the economy to grow. The new forests constitute economic, social and environmental benefits, allowing the forest industry to create new jobs and increase their contribution to the nation's economic recovery, "said the Minister.

Portugal hit record for renewable energy in 2013

Portugal has reached a record level last year, with regard to the production of electricity from renewable energy sources. About 58.3% of the total electricity consumed in 2013 was produced from renewable sources, which represents an increase of 20% compared to 2012.

If it is only considered domestic production, the renewables contribution increases to 61.7%. In the Face of this increased production of renewable energy in the past year it was possible to reduce the share of imported electricity at about 2.8 times, according to Quercus, which translates into a decrease of 10% of the total electricity consumed.

The difference between the values in the last two years is explained by the weather conditions. According to Quercus, 2012 was a very dry year, 58% below average. In contrast, 2013 was a wet year, 17% above the average. Thus, the production of renewable energy from water resources, using the dams more than doubled in the last year.

Also the percentage of energy produced from wind farms increased by 2013, almost 20%. With regard to photovoltaics, the increase of the installed capacity in the country allowed an increase of 25% compared with the same period of the previous year. However, the electricity generated from solar energy still accounts for 1% of the total electricity consumed, "which shows a huge potential for growth," said Quercus in a press release in conjunction with the Portuguese renewable energy Association (Apren).

"2013 was a year in which demonstrated the advantage of Portugal have bet on its natural resources to produce electricity because, besides having prevented imports of fossil fuels and emissions of greenhouse gases, the fact that 60% of the electricity consumed from renewable origin be allowed to stabilize the price of this well, which is also important to help Portugal out of the crisis"says the Chairman of the Board of Learning, António Sá da Costa.

Bet on renewable save €846 million allowed

According to the two associations to produce electricity of renewable origin enabled save almost 850 million (R $ 2,731 .4 billion) in 2013: €806 million on imports of fossil fuels (natural gas and coal) and € 40 million in allowances for carbon dioxide. In total, the savings amounted to €846 million.

"The emissions associated with electricity production + totaled 13 million tonnes of CO2 in 2013, about 20% of the total emissions of greenhouse gases present in Portugal", indicate the Quercus and Learning. However, between 2012 and 2013 there has been a reduction in CO2 emissions of around 2.3 million tonnes, the statement. This value, a million tons due to reduced use of coal power plants.

To the Group's coordinator of energy and climate change of Quercus is necessary to "continue to invest in renewable energies and in energy efficiency allowing the recovery of the economy without burdening the environment." "For this we need an investment in awareness and proper planning of the energy sector also towards a desirable climate policy demanding".

Hamburg wants to become a city without cars within 20 years

The city of Hamburg, Germany, is working on a plan that could eliminate the movement of cars in the city centre within the next 15 to 20 years, becoming a city greener, healthy and pleasant to live and walk. The "Grünes Netz", or Green Network, provides for the creation of pedestrian routes and cycle paths which will connect to the existing car.

These new routes will connect the main parks, playgrounds, gardens and cemeteries of Hamburg. The resulting network will cover about 40% of the second largest city in Germany and should allow the passers-by, cyclists and tourists largely circular of the city on foot or by bike.

However, the objectives of the Green Network are much more comprehensive. The city recognizes the need for changes in the face of global warming: in the last 60 years the average temperature of the city increased nine degrees Celsius and the water level of the sea has risen 20 centimetres â€" and is expected to increase another 30 cm until 2100. The circulation of fewer cars will lead to lower carbon dioxide emissions and the green spaces that will be expanded, along with the Green paths, will alleviate the danger of floods associated with strong rainfall and storms.

Additionally, such a network will contribute to the health of the city and its inhabitants. The Green Network will still offer opportunities for climbing, swimming, water sports and nature observation, referred to Inhabitat.

The Green Network of Hamburg is part of a growing trend in Europe to make the greenest and sustainable cities, through the creation of more green areas and pedestrian routes and cycle paths, which not only cross the cities as the link with the suburbs. The most ambitious project in this area will be maybe Copenhagen, with the creation of 26 super highways for bikes, which is integrated in the aim of becoming a carbon neutral city until 2050. Recently, Brussels also revealed plans to eliminate the circulation of cars the main routes from the city centre.

Hungary: town flooded by toxic sludge becomes a model green city

The 4 October 2010, the Hungarian town of Devecser woke up flooded by a red toxic sludge leaked from a central reservoir of aluminum oxide, which exploded (pictured). The flood of mud killed 10 people and severely feriou other 150. However, three years after the accident, the city was rebuilt and is now a model green city.

Thanks to the Mayor's vision, Toldi Tamás, Devecser is now a locale that uses local and renewable sources of energy and farming their own food. The new sustainable development plan was designed by Hungarian architect Imre Makovecz, free of charge, and includes a park in the area most affected by the toxic sludge.

In the immediate vicinity of the park there is a 30-acre Mall that provides wood to warm the 87 dwellings that were built eight months after the disaster. Every summer, a team of loggers cut the poplar trees and plant new trees. Geothermal energy is also part of the energy plan of Devecser and provides power to a very busy bus terminal, reports the Guardian.

In addition to renewable energy sources, agriculture is not neglected by municipal authorities. "I want to bring back healthy farming techniques with low emission levels of carbon dioxide that we had before. Secondly, we must ensure that all our public institutions use local production. Are healthier than the stuff you buy in Tesco, "says Tamás. This city of Hungary, in the region of Veszprém, intends to install later this year a dehydration of vegetables fed solar energy, in order to promote demand for local products.

Madrid: transportation tickets are already sponsored

All cities and countries have a big problem when it comes to mobility: how to ensure the financial viability of a sector, by nature, a deficit, but that, after all, is the service not only of the people who use it but of the entire economy, environment and society?

In Madrid, the new form found by raising more revenue is in marketing. Second minus one Car, the Consorcio Regional de Transportes (CRTM), entity that manages public transportation in local autonomous community, has established a partnership with the El Corte Inglés to convert the passes in an attractive way to promote a product or disseminate a campaign.

Thus, since January 1 the contactless electronic tickets of public transport of the Spanish capital incorporating the logo of El Corte Inglés and a QR Code that refers to the company's online shopping site.

According to the sustainable mobility aggregator, about 50 thousand new passes will incorporate the logo of El Corte Inglés, which becomes the new sponsor of the Madrid public transport.

The idea is a way to generate new revenue for the regional body of mobility â€" the Consortium also hopes to draw the attention of other advertisers and open "a new path of possibilities" for the Madrid public transport network.

In parallel, the CRTM presented this year a new source of revenue, which consists of personalization of social passes â€" with images â€" which has a cost of € 3 ($ 9.6). So far, about 1,000 users have customized their tickets.

Rio de Janeiro: heat activated sprinkler system of the Mall

We arrived in 2014 and the previous year's scenario repeats itself: half the planet desperate with the cold and record minimum temperatures, storms and rain; the other half with hot flashes that, year after year, are beating, also they, maximum levels earlier.

The Brazil is one of the countries where the summer is becoming more extreme. This year, the high temperatures that have registered in the country already provided a situation ludicrous, to say the least: the sprinkler system of a shopping mall in Rio de Janeiro called automatically due to heat.

According to the Brazilian press, the system sprays were well received by the customers of the Mall-they sought shelter from the Sun in the Shopping Leblon, precisely â€" but it is an alert for extreme weather conditions.

According to the commercial centre, would be about 40 degrees C in the Shopping Leblon when the sprinkler system if auto-accionou. "The lower basket activated automatically due to the temperature that you feel in the city," explained the Mall on Twitter.

In recent days, the temperature in Rio de Janeiro came to 50ºc.

Leftover food will warm up thousands of apartments in New York

New York City will begin to reclaim the mountain of leftovers sent daily to the trash, mix it with waste water and produce biogas. The project will warm up 5,200 homes and apartments New Yorkers in the short and medium term.

According to the Daily News, the pilot program is part of the strategy to reduce CO2 emissions from American city in 30% until 2017 â€" the PlanNYC â€" and has as its starting point the collection of organic food and its shipment to the pre-processed treatment center of Newton Creek, in Brooklyn.

Here, she is mixed with sewage sludge of wastewater to create biogas, a natural by-product of the process of treatment of Newton Creek.

Later, and through a partnership with the National Grid, the methane-rich biogas is converted to natural gas quality, followed by regular shape to people's homes in the five boroughs of the city.

The project was announced in December and, in addition to give a logical destination to the amount of wasted food, will help reduce CO2 emissions equivalent to removing 19 thousand cars from the streets per year.

The leftovers will be collected from 200 public schools, especially in Brooklyn. If the program is successful, the city will collect food waste from other 200 schools in the metropolis and more than 100 thousand homes.

"So far, limitávamo us to bury the food. When investing in composting and food waste management, we can help better the environment for our grandchildren, "explained to the Daily News the New York sanitation Commissioner, John Doherty.

United Kingdom hit record for wind power generation in December

December was a great month for wind energy in the United Kingdom, according to the Renewable UK, which coordinates the statistics of wind energy and offshore wind energy in the country.

Taking advantage of a trend that is also recurrent in many of the countries that have strengthened investment in renewables, the United Kingdom raised a total of 2.841 .090 megawatts/hour (MWh) of wind energy, about 10% of the energy needs of the country.

This energy would be enough to electrify 5.7 million homes, according to the Renewable UK.

The December 21, a Saturday, the wind farm generated 132.81 2 MWh and provided 13% of the total electricity demand that day â€" which was a daily record.

Until then, the best month ever had been October 2013, with 1.956 .437 MWh, representing about 8% of the UK's energy needs of that month.

Photographer constructs drone to capture wildlife in the Serengeti

The British photographer Will Burrard-Lucas built a drone at home to capture the incredible wildlife of Serengeti, Africa. Powered by six mini-motors, the drone can fly up to 15 minutes at a time, allowing the Burrard-Lucas plans so far unexplored by his colleagues.

The British managed to "catch" the hunt of the hyenas, wildebeest migration and the Hippo bath through a camera GoPro Hero3 +. Burrard-Lucas says that this technique is perfect for photographing the animals without scaring them off or put his own life in danger â€" still, we have some doubts.

The photographer, who lives in Tanzania, managed to control the drone about a mile away, also using a live video and a remote screen. According to press reports, the drone was mounted in five months.

"Animals react differently to the drone. The large animals do not see what comes from the air as a threat, since predators are terrestrial. The Hyena that I picked up was relaxed, just smelled the drone, "explained Will Burrard-Lucas.

The megacity of Shanghai, China, had the largest subway system in the world, with the inauguration earlier this year of two new lines â€" line 12 and 16 â€". With 6.7 million passengers transported in 2013, the Shanghai metro is preparing to climb this bar.

With the two inaugurations, the Shanghai metro will count with a length of more than 500 kilometres, an impressive number but that won't be for here: according to minus one Car, which cites the BBC over the next few years will be added to the network more 230 kilometres, an upper extension, for example, the Paris metro.

Unlike the known payment systems, Shanghai metro fares are charged according to the distance travelled. The September 15, 2005, when the Shanghai Government decided to raise the price of tickets, fares ranged from 3 Yuan (approximately €0,36-R) for journeys under 6 km away, 8 Yuan (€0,97-€3,1) for travel distances with more than 46 miles.

For most lines, standard fare is 3 Yuan (approximately €0,36-€1,1) for trips with distances over 6 km, adding 1 yuan (€0,12-€0,3) for each additional 10 km traveled. In April 2008, the highest rate was for 9 Yuan (about € 1 â€" €3,2).

While Shanghai reaches this week 567 kilometres of track in operation, London has 400 miles and New York 337 kilometres. Already the subway of São Paulo, Brazil's largest network, has 74 kilometers and the metro of Lisbon has 45.5 kilometers.

Portuguese entrepreneur launches Sunglasses made of bamboo

"Halting the destruction of the delicate ecosystem of our planet and the desire to become more ' green ' is not just another topic of conversation". It is the Mission of the Boo.

The Booglasses is a brand of Portuguese sunglasses that sells these fashion accessories â€" mainly in bamboo but also in wood-, what makes these glasses in a renewable and sustainable object. The brand was recently launched on the market â€" at the end of last year â€" at the hands of Marco Salinas.

"It can be said that this project was born a chance. One day, while browsing the internet, I discovered that already manufactured bamboo sunglasses and I fell immediately by the concept and the beauty of these glasses, "said Marco Santos to GreenSavers.

Follow to Booglasses Facebook.

Quickly this entrepreneur found that his glasses were a bamboo covered as yet unknown in Portugal and even in the rest of Europe, "where are the fingers of one hand the countries where there are these types of sunglasses". "Only in the United States, Brazil and Australia there are some brands on the market implemented. And quite successfully ", indicates. In this way, Marco Santos realized quickly that could bring this concept to the country. The name for the brand of glasses arose naturally, since corresponds to bamboo in English "bamboo".

The Booglasses are made entirely of bamboo, which has special advantages and ecologically positive: the strength and flexibility of the material and the strength/weight ratio. In addition, bamboo is a plant that grows more quickly, and may, in some cases, grow up to a metre a day. this way, bamboo can be used as a raw material without jeopardising the sustainability of species.

The glasses are manufactured manually, but not in Portugal. This is because, after a market research, Marco Salgado hasn't found who could manufacture the glasses in the country.

Currently, the glasses are sold exclusively online, through the website. However, Marco Santos does not rule out the possibility of introducing the brand in some commercial spaces. The glasses are available in several models â€" which correspond to species of bamboo â€" and colors. Prices vary between € 75 and € 80 euros. The lenses have UV protection and are polarized.

Our readers know how much we love abandoned building â€" especially those who have just renovated and at the same time manage to retain some of its history. The building that for years housed the market floor Loureiro, in downtown Lisbon, recently transformed into efficient car park.

Recovery kept the original architecture of the building and added a floor to the six existing ones. Coordinated by the enterprise and mobility in Lisbon (EMEL), the project built 192 parking spaces, with 32 of these, are prepared for the supply of electric vehicles.

In addition to the downtown Lisbon 192 parking spaces â€" in an area in which these scarce â€" the new park just by introducing a new concept of efficient car park.

"We have acted in the main vectors of consumption of a park â€" the lighting and ventilation. This Park has natural ventilation, so the energy consumption associated with it is null. The facades receive natural light, so we can, through a lighting management system and regulation of flow of lighting, artificial lighting control, "explained to the green economy Pedro Laurel, of Galp.

The bet on efficient lighting and natural ventilation allowed reduce energy consumption by 30%. Before, the monthly bill came to € 1,800. 144 were also installed photovoltaic panels, which help reduce the electricity bill and prevent the emission of 300 tons of carbon dioxide. The panels also allow upload about 1000 electric vehicles per year.

"The project was four years old and was stopped. Is a difficult project with a complicated economic viability, and the solution found was to add other valences and outdoor Park, which contribute to its sustainability, "added António Júlio Almeida, President of EMEL.

Los Angeles: jaywalking is more expensive to park illegally

Los Angeles is repressing passersby that circulate in the city illegally, particularly those that cross roads outside the walkways or when the signal is red. However, the fines applied to these transgressors are heavier than those applied to drivers who do not respect the code.

The cheapest ticket for parking in prohibited places in this Californian City is €42, and the most common one is €53. Comparatively, cross a street illegally â€" an "art" that is already known for "jaywalking" â€" can cost €144, referred to Quartz.

The effort that the authorities are doing to punish violators legally is a reaction to the revitalization of downtown Los Angeles, which brought more people into the streets without their cars. The problem is that the city was built for cars and not to passersby.  In fact, the "jaywalking" is encouraged by the automotive industry, that by making the streets dangerous for passersby benefits from an increased demand for automobiles.

As the buried skeletons influenced the construction of the London underground

Yesterday, we wrote here that archaeologists have discovered a number of skeletons in the expansion works of the Mexico City metro, leaving on standby to new infrastructure and molding, perhaps, the location of future seasons.

The phenomenon, however, is not restricted to Mexico City. In London, according to the book Necropolis: London and Its Dead, the construction of The Tube-one of the most amazing and complete metro systems in the world â€" was highly complex. Due in part to the large amount of skeletons that the soil is home to London.

According to the author of the book, Catharine Arnold, the city is completely full of bodies, improvised cemeteries and wells created during the time of the black death. These eventually influence the location and construction of metro stations.

The author also gives a clear example of the difficulty with which planners and engineers found themselves in the middle of the 19th century, when the construction of the subway and ripped solidified its expansion. There is a clear change of direction on the Piccadilly line, East of South Kensington. "Actually, the curve tunnel between Knightsbridge and South Kensington stations because it was impossible to stick to the mass of skeletons that remains buried in Hyde Park," explained Arnold.

In other words: the soil is so dense, due to the interconnectedness of the skeletons of victims of the great plague in the 17th century, that the excavation teams from The Tube, 200 years later, failed to even enter this land.

The metro bypasses to avoid this incredible congestion of skulls, legs and arms attached to the ground â€" an artificial geology made from people. Interestingly, after all this time, as the city was molded to the expansion of the metro, to buildings built later, and how it all broke the decisions taken for several centuries.

In short: urban planners from 200 and 300 years â€" as well as decision-makers and public hygiene authorities-unintended London's current influencers were. You can meet other histories of the book here.

Box of television is the apparatus which spends more energy

When you switch the box on television it is assumed that the appliance stop wasting energy. However, these devices â€" such as most electronic devices â€" continue to spend some energy, since it still connected to the mains.

And these devices are those who spend more energy. In the United States, for example, more than 100 billion kilowatts per hour of energy are wasted every year, which cost the Americans more than €7,9 billion (US $ 25.5 billion), referred to Grist.

The wasted energy translates into wasted money on the electricity bill. And, at the same time, more energy is consumed unnecessarily, which means a higher consumption of resources and increased pollution.

The television boxes use more energy than other devices, because, in fact, are never turned off. The problem of the energy expenditure of these TV gadgets worsened with the introduction of the technology of digital video recorder (DVR), which allows the user to record a program at pre-defined time and watch later.

According to ABC News, a DVR device consumes 40% more energy than the devices that do not allow recording. However, there are solutions to reduce the waste of energy, although the telecommunications sector is not very willing to make changes to equipment. Programming the devices to turn off in the middle of the day or night, when they are not being used is a way to save on electricity bill.

"To reduce energy consumption, companies may make changes to the software without additional costs to implement the night mode or program the hard drives to spin when not taping can reduce energy consumption between five to seven watts", indicates the New York Times.

New York: new mayor wants to end the carriage rides

The new mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, wants to end the centuries-old tradition of carriage rides in the city. This Monday, Blasio reiterated that one of the first actions you will take is to fulfill the promise to remove the electoral horses from the streets of New York.

"Let's get rid of the Chariots, horses, period," said the new mayor that began on January 1, the functions referred to in the Huffington Post. Second Blasio, this industry is a form of animal cruelty.

However, for years the animal rights advocates protested the movement of cars in Manhattan, dating back to 1858, the drivers of the chariots claim that the animals are treated well and that there are other interests associated with the intention to prohibit the movement of those vehicles.

"Horses don't belong in a congested city and urban design, where constantly breathing pollution and circulate among the dangerous traffic", defends the NYCLASS, an animal rights group that wants to end the practice.

"People spend, see the horses and think it's a kind of slavery. But I don't really know that this is the life of a horse, "said Fred Lam, a leader of these carriages. "The horses are strong, are healthy and working for a living. If you don't do this, they get depressed, "he argues.

If the plans of Blasio are implemented, drivers of the chariots will go to court. "This isn't over," asserts Christina Hansen, carriage driver and spokesperson for these professionals. "You can't get rid of an activity which is perfectly legal and well regulated ... just because a few people don't like".

Some drivers doubt still the true motives behind the ban who want to implement. "There is a group of people that is feeding this nonsense. The person who is financing this campaign is an individual with interest, "said Dave Koch, another driver. "His name is Steve Nislick [co-founder and President of NYCLASS]. He is interested in buying the ground where the stables are located near the Javits Center, to build hotels, "says Koch.

According to the New York Post, NYCLASS spent €564,3 million to attack the rival campaign of Blasio, Christine Quinn, who was a supporter of the chariots on the streets of New York. The intention of ending with the horse-drawn carriages is implemented, the new mayor of New York intends to replace these vehicles by vintage trams, which will be conducted by professionals who now lead the horses.

Illinois: population of wolves back to normal numbers 150 years later

For 150 years, the wolves were hunted to extinction in Illinois, United States, having returned only in 2002, in small numbers. Now, according to the State Department of natural resources, the population will have numbers already considered "normal":

The increase in the number of wolves has an explanation: the population of wolves from nearby Wisconsin began to explore other lands, taking this species, until then extinct, to recover the habitat their ancestors.

After a first sighting in 2002, these have become normal in recent years. The vast majority of wolves came from Wisconsin, a State with nearly 800 animals.

Still, according to Joe Kath, endangered species specialist with the Natural Resources Department, we are still far from seeing wolves normally settled in Illinois. It is good news, however, the fact that the sightings are increasing.

Also because of this new scenario, explains to the Associated Press, local authorities have already begun to outline strategies for managing the conservation of wolves.

Opposition from England and the Czech Republic to 500 might cost renewable thousand jobs in Europe

About 500 000 jobs are at risk in Europe, if the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic (in the photo, the capital Prague) continue to oppose the European plan to reduce CO2 emissions, based on the development of renewable energy. The plan extends to 2030.

Both British as Czechs aim to choose how they can reduce their carbon emissions â€" the idea of the European Union, however, focuses on the overall increase in the proportion of renewable energy.

So, United Kingdom and Czech Republic intend to, for example, ensuring the reduction of CO2 emissions through nuclear energy. These negotiations take place since last spring, when European countries began to consider the objectives of combating climate change to 2030 â€" the current plan expires in 2020.

Instead of investing in renewable, United Kingdom and the Czech Republic want an overall objective of reducing CO2 emissions â€" up to 50% compared to 1990 figures. "We need a technological neutral approach, taking into account how each country will achieve their objectives ... establish an objective of renewable energies at European Union level is inflexible and unnecessary," said British Secretary of State for energy and climate, Ed Davey.

However, a preliminary report developed by the European Commission concluded that include targets for energy efficiency and renewable energy to Europe will help create about 568 thousand jobs in the old continent until 2030.

Germany, Denmark, Austria and Finland were already satisfied with these new objectives â€" United Kingdom and Czech Republic are blocking a consensus.

Scottish Government spared €3,5 million and decreased CO2 emissions by reducing air travel

In 2011, the Prime Minister, Pedro Passos Coelho, promised that he would travel in economy class, as well as other elements of the Government, so as to reduce the expenses of the Executive. However, couldn't the Portuguese Government further decrease the air travel, not only to save on public budget but to also reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2)?

Well, that's what made the Government of Scotland. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Scotland, the Scottish Executive has approximately €3,5 million and reduced CO2 emissions by 28% by replacing the travel of its members for face-to-face meetings, videoconferences. The data indicate that the Scottish leaders were held under three thousand trips a year between 2007 and 2012, decreasing the distance travelled in 1.8 million kilometres.

As a result, the Government avoided the 650 tonnes of CO2 emissions, saving €693,2 thousand per year, an invoice amounting to approximately €2,2 million. In 2010, the WWF estimated that if the Governments of the United Kingdom and administrations of large British companies eliminate unnecessary flights could save more than €120,1 million and 59 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

According to the Scottish Minister for environment and climate change, Paul Wheelhouse, the Government invested in new technologies that allowed the meetings occur via videoconference or by telephone rather than face-to-face. "This is a small part of our environmental strategy to reduce our ecological footprint, and we aim to increase the use of videoconferencing for meetings and to encourage the use of more sustainable travel options," said the King, quoted by BusinessGreen.

As businesses are the hide appliances repair manuals

We live in the information age, where knowledge is at a distance of a click. However, there are more and more ways of keeping the information hidden from the public. One of these ways is the copyright-the right to copy.

Are these rights that the major technology companies are using to hide in the public domain the repair manuals, that enable the consumer or repair centers repair a product. The concealment of these practical guides is having consequences, since it affects the circular economy, which is based on a logic of reuse.

Without the repair manuals, the life cycle of equipment becomes smaller since they cannot be repaired and reused. Is this logic of descartelização that appeals to companies, since it increases profits.

This phenomenon, called planned obsolescence-decision of a producer to develop, manufacture and distribute a product purposely for consumption that quickly becomes obsolete or non-functional, so as to force the consumer to acquire the product new generation â€" was created in the 1920, having its greatest expression in the decades of 1940 and 1950 and re-emerged recently with the big push of the technological age.

Using the right to copy, organizations advocating that the instruction manuals are own creations, protecting them from public access, soon available for consultation and the copy. The copyright violation is punished legally in most countries.

The use of the copyright allows that feed the planned obsolescence of the large companies. Two major technological don't provide access to their repair manuals are Apple and Toshiba.

Last year, Toshiba made news by thanks Tim Hicks, a computer repairman, erasing all repair manuals Toshiba products from your site, writes The Guardian. The page since young Australian â€" Future Proof â€" contains several laptops repair manuals, which can be consulted free of charge.

According to Japanese technological giant, repair manuals belong exclusively to Toshiba and contain information that only the brand and repair technicians can access. Such as Apple, Toshiba and many other companies do not allow access to these guides-Acer, Sony ... There are few technology companies that provide the manuals to consumers and between these brands include companies such as Dell or HP.

If the repair manuals that the companies conceal are disclosed on the internet, trademarks are the copyright to remove copies from circulation.

The circular economy

The circular economy is an economic model which is opposed to the linear model. The industrial linear model is based on the premise "to buy, use and dispose". The circular model is based on the premise of Lavoisier's Law-"nothing is lost, everything is transformed"-since it assumes a reuse of products, where the biological and technical are combined cycle recycle and reuse products, allowing you to create new capital.

The concept of circular economy has several decades and cannot be assigned to a single author. The concept evolved over the years and studied by several schools. However, it was in the late 1970 that its practical effects in modern economic systems and in industrial processes began to be fleshed out by a small number of academics.

The circular economic model is interconnected with the sustainability of the planet. To assume the reuse of products it is expected that the production processes require less raw material and it's not created so much waste.

Pastor younger of the United Kingdom is a two-year-old boy with cerebral palsy

Arthur Jones mends fences, feeds and comes to sheep. Normal work of a pastor. However, Arthur is the pastor of United Kingdom, with only two and a half years. With this age, the boy already has a herd of six sheep breed, always under the watchful eye of Grandma â€" Nicky Jesse, one of the few English shepherds-which teaches.

Among the circle of British Ministers, Arthur is a kind of celebrity. Is the youngest member of Poll Dorset and Dorset Horn Sheep Breeder's Association, has already won three prizes with his sheep and until I was introduced to members of the British Royal family.

The two-year-old boy is also the proud parent: was born prematurely with cerebral palsy. According to the doctors, the little Arthur couldn't walk before the four years. However, in September this year the boy took his first steps unaided. The family believes that this progress is due to animals, in particular the Twinkle â€" a cordeira, which like Arthur was born prematurely.

The boy and the sheep have developed an unusual friendship: it seems that Twinkle, who was breastfed the bottle by Arthur, understands the needs of the boy. If Arthur's fall, the animal knows that the boy doesn't get up alone and go to him, serving as support to raise.

"The Twinkle fought for life, such as Arthur", explains the grandmother. "She was very ill when he was born and was rejected by his mother. So I began to suckle her with a bottle. When Arthur saw what I was doing, asked if he could feed too, "he says. Arthur fed Twinkle for four months and the sheep became his pet.

Was abandoned for a thousand years rediscovered in Spain

Spanish archaeologists have discovered traces of a vineyard abandoned for over a thousand years in Zaballa, a medieval Roundup that disappeared in the 15th century. Basque Country researchers are working on this and other 300 gatherings, abandoned as people migrated from rural areas to the towns and cities

Thus, and in accordance with the International Quaternary, archaeologists were able to identify a series of terraces on site as vineyards â€" they studied the seeds, pollen and tools left behind to come to this conclusion.

Metal tools discovered at the site will not have been used for crops of cereals, like wheat, but for wine crops. The venue will again be studied to give historians and scientists more insight into the daily life of the people of a thousand years ago. The objective is to understand how the medieval society changed in response to political and economic pressures of the time.

Scientists discover gene that causes asthma

American scientists have discovered the human gene that causes asthma, which will enable new treatment or even curing the disease.

If the gene in question has deficiencies, the lining of the Airways can be weakened, which makes people more vulnerable to respiratory disease.

In the long term, scientists hope that gene therapy can provide a hope for patients. "The discovery provides hope for individuals with severe asthma, since the gene seems to play an important role for people with this specific condition," said Hakon Hakonarson, of children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

To reach this conclusion scientists compared the DNA of 1,173 children with severe asthma with the genetic code of 2,522 healthy people and found that those affected by asthma were more likely to have a particular genetic variation. The gene in question controls the way the cells lining the walls of the Airways are linked. The abnormal gene-bearing cells are less interconnected, which makes them more vulnerable to irritation that trigger asthma attacks. Researchers believe that this gene is the main factor that triggers the disease in at least one in every five cases of asthma.

"Nearly twice as many people who have severe asthma have this genetic variant that healthy individuals", indicates Hakonarson. "There's a subset of people with asthma, between 15% and 20%, where this gene has a greater impact," he adds.

Scottish castle on sale for €450 thousand

The world has changed a lot in five centuries â€" and some of the priorities have been largely modified. That explains that a 16th-century Scottish castle is for sale for €450 thousand (R $ 1.4 million) and a parking space in Kensington, London, at the cost of about €480, 000 ($ 1.54 million).

Kilmartin Castle, with three bedrooms, situated north of Lochgilphead, in stunning Scotland, and includes several turrets and a land size of 0.4 hectares. According to Knight Frank, the estate agent who is selling this piece of history, the castles are usually valued between € 6.6 million ($ 19.5 million) and €7,1 million ($ 23.2 million), but the castle of Kilmartin is the cheapest I have at hand â€" extremely cheap, let it be.

According to the Research Department of Knight Frank, the price of this castle is equivalent to the area of a closet in Knightsbridge, Hyde Park, or the ground floor of a small house in Guildford, in Surrey.

Kilmartin Castle was purchased by the current owners, an elderly couple who uses it as a second residence in the years 80. Then, he was in ruins and turned out to be extensively rebuilt and restored.

Moreover, owners are enthusiasts of the castles. At one point, owned three castles: two in Scotland and one in Cumbria. In addition to an impressive interior and stunning surroundings, the property has easy access to salmon and trout fishing and golf. The village of Kilmartin has a school, post office, Church and a hotel.

Here are some pictures of the Château low cost.

10 environmental themes for 2014 (with LIST)

Yesterday, we published the list of the best and worst environmental facts of 2013 for the non-governmental organization Quercus. Today, let's talk about what awaits us in 2014. The ONGA made the list of the most pressing issues for 2014 â€" the absence of a National Mobility Plan the entry into force of the new community support framework for Portugal.

Keep the list of themes that, over the next 12 months, will be on the table for the environmental sector.

Environmental perspectives for 2014

1. National Mobility Plan

"Still does not exist a national mobility plan, which focuses on serious issues unresolved in major urban centres and in metropolitan areas and also in connection with the interior.

The Country continues to drift to the individual road transport, aggravating its foreign energy dependence and failing dismally the need for an adaptation to a post-oil reality. Urge the strengthening and the reinvention of the railway and maritime transport of passengers and of alternative forms of transport and slight in major cities. There are timid initiatives, but much remains to be done. "

2. Arrangement of Albufeira in the new planning cycle

"We are now in the middle of the second planning cycle in the area of water resources. The second river basin district management plans are being prepared and will be soon put into public discussion. At the same time, Spain shall act unilaterally to proceed to further Transfer Tejo-Safe, expeditiously and without inclusion in their plans. How then can a shared management of common water basins-Minho, Douro, Tagus and Guadiana? There is an urgent need to renegotiate the Arrangement of Albufeira and impose ecological flows, urgency as more urgent as the water resources tend to decrease significantly address climate change. "

3. entry into force of the new community support framework for Portugal

"Lying on the backstretch the negotiations for the agreement of partnership for European Structural funds and investment 2014-2020, between Portugal and the European Commission, Quercus expects that this will not be another missed opportunity to tackle some of the problems which remain inexplicably to subsist in our country. Some of these environmental problems that need solving through lack of treatment of wastewater from villages and by environmental liabilities resulting from industrial activity, but also because of the lack of investment on the railway and on sustainable mobility, renewable energy and energy efficiency, the promotion of recycling of waste to acceptable levels, and on the conservation of natural values, with special focus on conservation of Classified Areas (protected areas, Natura 2000 and RAMSAR sites), avoiding also the public funding of projects harmful to the environment. "

4. crisis, energy and climate

"In context of crisis, pollutant emissions, including greenhouse gases, have been declining, since the transport sector to the industrial sector as well as domestic. However, it is vital that in 2014, with an eventual economic recovery, we are prepared to promote a development betted on consumption reduction, energy efficiency, in parallel with the improvement of the quality of life. 2014 will also be a crucial year for a future climate agreement in 2015, and it is crucial that Portugal take on political positions more suitable for a sustainable development. "

5. effective monitoring of the pós-avaliação phase of projects subject to EIA for public authorities.

"The monitoring of the pós-avaliação phase of projects subject to Environmental impact assessment (EIA) by public authorities, in particular on the part of APA-Portuguese Agency for environment and Nature Conservation Institute â€" ICNF and forests, has been embarrassing. It is expected that, with the publication of new legislation which establishes the legal regime of environmental impact assessment, last October, there is a greater concern for public authorities with one of the most important areas of public policy environment. "

6. stability and firmness of environmental policies in Portugal

"About two and a half years after this Government has initiated functions, the results achieved in the area of the environment are falling short of expectations. They took two years in preparation, restructuring and adaptation on a bet in a MAMAOT that was won, not only due to logistical and bureaucratic issues, but also due to a number of decisions taken in the wrong direction. "

7. forest fires

"With the adoption of the new legal Regime of Afforestation and reforestation, the prospects of sustainable development of the Portuguese forest in terms of public policies are almost non-existent, with the likely expansion of monocultures of eucalyptus, and the absence of fire containment tracks with other species more resistant, so it can be expected that the environmental impacts of forest fires continue to be of concern."

8. Privatization of the company General of Fomento (EGF)

"Despite the Government's determination to move towards privatization of EGF, sub-holding of Águas de Portugal for the business of municipal solid waste, it is expected that in 2014 can common sense prevail and that the proposal would be better assessed, to the extent that beyond the inability shown by the Ministry of environment in managing the issue, there are significant environmental risks associated with a privatization of this type."

9. international year of the family agriculture

"In what will be the international year of the family agriculture, expected in 2014 to increase the visibility of family agriculture and small farmers, and sensitize the world population to such important aspects of this type of agriculture, that pass through the role it plays in eradicating hunger and poverty, the improvement of the livelihood of the people, for the proper management of natural resources, and for the protection of the environment and sustainable development. "

10. strengthening of national agricultural production but I sustainably

"According to the intentions announced by the Government, 2014 is expected to be a year in which the national agricultural production should continue to have an increase, as a way the country overcome many of the shortcomings that reveals the level of food production and increase our exports. And this is certainly one of the areas where we can and should invest, is however essential to protect the environment impacts, both in the short and the medium/long term and as such adopted demanding criteria of which should be to develop production, with quality products, environmentally friendly and preferably in less intensive production methods and more sustainablein particular the organic production method. "
